Where is the inbox: Mind Dump

Comments: 7 I don’t believe that the Inbox should be listed as a Project. GTD clearly states that the Inbox is where you dump everything in your mind. This does not mean you will actually do everything there until you process it. It’s not a project because projects in GTD are simply things that require 2 or more task to complete. There should be a separate Inbox section. It’s not a project. This is the one thing holding back from using Nozbe. When we have an inbox, we will process the items by adding them to an action list or projects. So there should also be an Action list of all items that are not part of projects but require actions. Using the inbox as a project and having all the actions you need to do stay in there, goes against GTD. When you process your inbox, it should be empty. Nozbe is doing this wrong. Comments:

The inbox should not be listed as a Project is my point. This goes against GTD. The Inbox is a sacred area where you dump all your thoughts for processing later. When you decide what needs to be a task or action. There should be an Action list per David Allen. There is also no Action list in Nozbe for task that don’t belong to projects. Nozbe is missing this point. 3 areas that are needed. 1. Inbox

I agree that the Inbox should be treated as a first class citizen. I’d like it to be a holding area for things that don’t have a place. I can dump NAs or Projects in there and the promote them to the appropriate place when I process my inbox.

We’ll correct this in such a way that the first project will be always first if you add new projects. But we I still believe having inbox as the first project is a way to go. You have drag and drop to move stuff from inbox to different projects… Anyway – please convince me – tell me WHY Inbox has to be different than the first project on your list. What additional benefit will it give you to have inbox separate? Please let me know, I’m open for discussion.

Because a project is defined as ‘anything that has more than 1 action step to complete it.’ Projects should have what should be a successful outcome statement attached to them. The inbox is the PRE-processed holding area of all of your collected actions/thoughts/someday/maybes/goals, etc. There is no completing the Inbox Project. The inbox is where you can mind dump into relatively easily, and not having to conform to filling out every check box. It is just a storage space until your next review. You could [IDEALLY] email/SMS/twitter actions into your Inbox for processing at a later time.

You CAN email/tweet actions into your Inbox for processing later. Can we SMS too? I didn’t know that. What’s in a name? What does it matter what you call it. Call me old-fashioned, but I’d call it the ‘pending tray’ – or the “To-be-filed pile” – but as long as one uses it, call it the “inbox” – why not? As long as it always stays at the top to receive those in-coming tweets etc..

But what’s the problem? Just use Inbox this way. The fact that it shows up on the project list does not enforce you to keep your items there. I dump notes to inbox, and frequently review Inbox to move them to correct projects.
The advantage of the current solution is that you are not forced to always go through the inbox. For example if you clearly know which project the current idea belongs to, you can assign it directly.
The only current problem is that Inbox is not sticky on the top of the projects list.
