Hello All,
As of last night Andriod application is finally out. YAY!!!
Now onto matter at hand. This is a beta version, but we have decided to make it open for all beta. This will enable us to spot bugs and issues that would have otherwise go unnoticed in smaller scale test.
Now for the sake of keeping it all in one place I would like to ask all, who are participating, to post their comments and bug reports HERE. I will be monitoring this thread closely and reporting back and forth between our tech and testers.
Thank you for cooperation.
Comments:
Samsung Galaxy Tab (7in)
No icons displayed on the main screen at all just text (Next Actions,Inbox,Projects, etc etc), the spaces where the icons should be link to the correct places so it’s still usable to me.
@ Bruce.
The sorting is not yet possible (iPhone does not have it yet either). It is a beta version and thus quite basic still.
The included features are:
1. display of actions, calendar, project and contexts
2.display of notes/files/En’s in projects, contexts
3. Adding/editing and removal of tasks, notes, projects and contexts
In the first update, apart from removal of at least of some reported bugs, the tech plans to add comments and basic team features such as delegation and project invitations.
@ Marcus. The tech is aware of this issue. Please do remember however that your Samsung is a tablet type of devise and the application is native for smartphone, as result there might be some issue while using the apps on them. Please do rest assured that your matter won’t be disregarded.
@Delfina
“The sorting is not yet possible (iPhone does not have it yet either).”
The iPhone does have such sorting.
I have an iPhone (which I don’t use as a phone for various reasons) and I just checked again to be sure. I changed the order of items on the iPhone Next Actions page, synchronised, and they were changed on my pc’s web browser. And visa versa also.
Stuff I’d like to see:
1. Alphabetization of items in task lists
2. Option to open the program on the Next Action page
Using Epic 4G..
1. I am having issue clicking on the Tasks, sometimes it does not seem to respond at all, having to press it multiple times. Project selection works fine though and does the highlighting. If this is issue with Next action and completed widgets in the row, may be you can utilize context menu. Press and hold
2. When I switch between portrait and landscape mode everything messes up real bad. Its similar to what Marcus is said on March 30 04:26
Again thanks for getting out the Beta, it looks great! One issue I am having is that landscape mode on a Moto Droid is not displaying correctly. Here are the 2 things I noticed about landscape:
1. I aspect ratios of all the images are wrong, so they look stretched.
2. There is no ability to scroll. There is no way to access the content that is below the bottom of the screen.
I did notice another post on this as well in one of the other android threads.
I have the same issues as Bob.
Stretched aspect and inability to scroll in landscape mode.
Using HTC Hero
1. Remove task button does not seem to do anything?
My completed tasks from yesterday are still showing today. (They do not show in iNozbe or on the web.)
Using HTC Evo
I’m very excited to see it finally released. Thank you.
I’m getting in and accessing my account fine (I’m sure speed will come with development) one time. The next time (several minutes later) the splash screen remains up. My X wasn’t frozen, because hitting the Home key would exit the app every time. After waiting several minutes, I finally pulled the battery and restarted. I’m using a Droid X.
Until now I have seen only one Bug. The comments of a Task are Not shown. The Button with the count of added comments is out of function.
I ‘m using a HTC Desire
Same problem already mentioned above. Stretched aspect and inability to scroll in landscape mode.
@ All. Noted and passed to tech
@ Bruce.. strange it does not work on mine, unless I’m doing something wrong… but nonetheless it is not yet on this version of beta.
@Frank. That is because, if you have read my comment at the start, comments are an aspect still to be added.
@Delfina – I can assure you that what I say about the iPhone is correct. I just wanted to make sure its noted as a functional gap (re mobile use) and that at some point it ought to be fixed.
Other general comments:
The Menu key does not work. Most apps honour putting options in here – even if they have other ways of delivering those options – in the Nozbe case with the top right ‘PLUS’ key. The Menu system offers icons and elaborating text and is generally more flexible then creating your own menu system. For example when I go into the ‘PLUS’ key area I don’t know what the icons mean. They are also small (on my HTC Desire they are). I think you should move to properly support the Android Menu button environment – its known and much more flexible.
There is no obvious Sync button. I know Nozbe says this happens automatically but there is no push out from the server of changes made there and you need to invoke it explicitly at times. On the iPhone app this is clearly shown. Until Michael’s latest blog I had no idea you could force an Android sync, but having it hidden away on the main home page (you have to know to hit the top left Nozbe logo to force it) is poor – again it should be in the menu system so it is clear.
Agree with others that having an options to jump straight to Next Actions is needed.
For the record I have no interest in any team features – my use is tipping in actions (with notes) and juggling them into order by hand with drag and drop. I appreciate others use will vary but at the moment the functional gap versus the iPhone (and normal PC experience) makes the Android app of no practical use to me. It’s been a long time to wait to this end. On the bright side at least something is out and at some point it will no doubt get to equal the iPhone functionality and ease of use.
Hi Michael, Hi Delfina.
After I got an email from you about android application, I’ve downloaded it immediately (even in my car), but now, I’ve few comments:
(please remove my comment from ‘Android’ Thread)
1. First start – If I don’t remember my password – I cannot exit the application. There is no ‘Exit’ button and the system ‘back’ doesn’t work.
2. While I’m writing my email and password – the application use the dictionary – it shouldn’t.
3. There is no ‘refresh’ button on the task list. I have to go to the home page, start sync, and then back to the task list in on of my projects.
4. In landscape mode all lists are cropped – the slider should recalculate his size or what ? The start screen (with logo) is also stretched in landscape.
5. If I don’t have an account on evernote there is an error in application while trying to add note. The tab should be enabled in settings.
6. Does the ‘sync’ option syncs also in the other direction ?? I don’t see my new created project on my website account.
I forgot to add: I’m using HTC Hero with Android 2.1
Hi Greg and Bruce,
I have noted your reports and comments. Passed them to our techies immediately also.
As for removing a comment from another thread… sadly this can’t be done….
@Bruce. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to give a wrong impression… I was simply surprised it works on you iPhone but on mine not.. maybe I need to reinstall the thing.
@Bruce, I’m with Delfina on moving items on the iPad app. Could the iPhone be different? Maybe you could share how you do it?
Sorting a list with drag and drop was not available when I create gtdroid.
The only solution I find out is:
Long press on the element to move, on the menu choose “move” then a short press on the destination.
It’s slow, it’s bad but kind of work.
@MichaelKoehler @Delfina
How to move items in a list in the iPhone version of Nozbe
When you have a list of items like on the Next Actions page or Projects page you can move them relative to one another by clicking on the ‘Edit’ button at top right. This redraws the list and offers a Delete icon on the left of each item and a move icon (three short horizontal bars) on the right. Press on the move icon and drag the item to where you want in the list. When you are finished click on the ‘Done’ button at top right. And then click on the sync button to make sure the changes go up to the server and are reflected on your web view. You may need to refresh the web page view to see all the changes mad.
I don’t actually use the iPhone as a phone and hence don’t use it for Nozbe regularly at all – so I’m no expert in the iPhone app. I just know it can juggle lists which the Android Nozbe app can’t currently. Note this is about iPhone – I don’t know anything about the iPad.
Can’t belive I’m explaining this – its nominally a Nozbe product!
Thanks! Wow, I can’t believe I never noticed that.
I use Android App on Xperia X10 (Japanese: SC-01B), running Android 2.1.
It freezes on the splash screen on the second time I try to open the app. (so it’s running in the background.)
After I killed the process with “Task Manager”, Nozbe app starts again.
@ Bruce,
Well then it is not really the drag’n‘drop Bruce. You have found a workaround ;-) that’s why I was surprised, because normal drag’n’ drop is not yet a feature on any of the apps. Apart from the fact that it is Macoscope product…not Nozbe ;-p
@Natsuhiko. I will pass that to our tech.
@delfina It clearly is drag and drop and no workround at all. It uses the standard iPhone UI for deleting and shuffling items in a list. This is good. I’ll refrain from saying more other then to note that any comparison between Macoscope and Nozbe on mobile app development is not flattering to Nozbe.
@ Bruce
Those are two different stories. Macoscope is a company dedicated to Apple related software design… that’s why we have decided to go with them there. I believe it has been a good choice.
As for us, Nozbe, we are a totally different bunch and I doubt comparing would be appropriate… as even when you look at Andriods… there are quite a few versions and each of mobile phone producers pretty much has their own version of that system…as result it is hard to make an apps that would in 1st version of beta would encompass all of those variations.
I love the Android app. Using it all the time now. Using a Droidx. My feedback:
So far though I like using it. It is a great timesaver. I especially like using the droid’s native voice recording to enter tasks. But as a feature request, it would be great to have a 1 click voice to task feature. Currently I have to click on “+” then click on the microphone in the keyboard, then record, then save. It works, but eliminated a couple clicks would be wonderful.
Thanks for getting this out to us all!
Chris
Hello Chris,
Thanks for the ideas. I will add those to the list. I will also report on your slowness issue. It maybe related to your particular version of Andriod. We’ll see what can be done.
@ Chris could you tell me what devise you are using it on?
I’m using Nozbe on an LG Optimus One. So far so good, but two small problems:
1. First Load can be very slow, and sometimes simply hangs. It would be nice to have a widget for quick entry of tasks, which could compensate for this.
2. Evernote notes (which is an amazing feature in theory!) seems hit or miss. Most of the time, linked notes that show up on the web client do not show up. Sometimes they do – it generally hit or miss.
Great work on getting the Beta out. I’ve been playing with the free version on and off, and this is what made me finally take the leap from RTM and pay for an account.
Droidx v. 2.3 Android
I’m using an HTC EVO
The problems I’m having are slow to load and some next actions are not showing up even though they are on the web. I tried syncing but that didn’t work.
Thanks
Ellen
Ok thanks for this data. Please do remember to provide us with info on the version you are on.. those do influence the performance.
As for the slowness. It has been reported already and the tech has decided to sit down and work on if further, thus the update that was to come out next week will be moved by a week or so. They want to make sure all they could to solve this was done before they release next version. I trust this is acceptable to all of you.
Once again thx for reporting all those issues.
Using HTC Incredible Android 2.2
Per earlier comments, lots of hanging, especially when move to Next Actions. So far today have been able to get to Next Actions 1 out of 4 trys. Is it because I currently have 160 Next Actions? Which leads to my main suggestion – being able to filter Next Actions by Context
Hello Kent,
Thanks for your report I will pass it to tech also. It may indeed be related to the amount of actions… but nonetheless needs checking and changing.
When is next update please
I believe it is to be out 1st week of May, as the works have almost been done on it.
Will there be any widgets with the new app? One of the things I think would be most helpful to me is to see my Next Actions right on my main screen. Thanks!
Can’t really say Kathryn.
I hear the update is to be out within next week or so. Thus confirming my suspicion on 1st week of May ;-)
“Can’t really say Kathryn.”
Why can’t you say Delfina? Do you not work for Nozbe?
Can you not talk to those doing the work and ask if this enhancement is in the next release or not?
By coincidence and following some talk about somebody leaving Nozbe for Nirvana 2 (http://www.nozbe.com/gtd/forum/section-1/post-9166128d/i_m_leaving_nozbe_for_nirvana2 ) I have just asked on the Nirvana site if something important to me is in their next Android release. It took a few days as questions were asked and then they came back saying it was in. The result is I’m very happy and informed. The result for Kathryn Rossi, I’d imagine, is that she is not so happy and cetainly not informed. But it goes beyond me and Kathryn – hundreds or thousands of people see such exchanges and are informed or not.
Hello Bruce,
I can’s say that something will be or won’t be if I do not get a clear answer on this from the tech. If I know something will be added… I DO SAY SO. Would you rather have me guess??? I sure can do that. But I would rather give you an honest answer even if it is not clear one way or the other.
I’m sorry if this is not to your liking. I do apologize.
HTC Incredible: I have some completed actions still showing in the Next Action and Project specific lists. Other than that, I like it. I’ve seen this problem in other posts. Will it be fixed in next release?
@Delfina – Of course you shouldn’t guess! But both you and the ‘tech’ work for Nozbe. It should be possible to ask the ‘tech’ a question and get a sensible answer. If that is not possible something feels wrong. I’ll leave it now.
@ Timothy, I believe it will be fixed.
@Bruce. Please do understand that sometimes even the technics can’t say if a feature will be or won’t be added. I have asked Michael on this last evening. He told me that it is possible, but they still have to look into it and before this update is out and stable the works on it won’t start. So at the moment I can say a widget is a possibility… but I still can’t tell you 100% it will be. I’m sorry.
@Delfina…
@David V asked when the update would come. You answered 1st week of May. @Kathryn Rossi then immediately asks if there will be widgets in the new app? I took this as part of the continuing stream rather then a generic question. Your latest answer indicates that no widgets are in the release this week. If your answer to Kathryn had said: “Talked to techs – afraid no widgets in the early May release, but they are under active consideration – will respond latter with what we look to do to bring Android app up to same level as iPhone.” then that would have been clearer then “Can’t really say”. We need to stop now.
What is the status of the update?
The update is almost ready, as I hear. They plan to have it out within next few days. Delay was caused by issue with display of Evernotes.
Thanks, I am looking forward to it.
@Bob. Me also ;-)
Delfina,
Will the Android Market list the Nozbe app as ready for an “Update” when you release the new version? Most of my other Android apps do this and it save’s looking for an update manually. thanks for info…
Mark
Any further info on update? It’s now the end of the week.
Delfina, could we have an idea please.
I’m sorry but there is not much I can do. Of what I know the tech is doing last tests on it and that they have had a big problem with Evernotes. I have just posted them a request for definite deadline.
Delfina,
Thanks for the update! Please keep us posted.
Bob
any news.
thanks
eduardo
And another week goes by…...
So Delfina, do the ‘techs’ just ignore you? 17th ‘I have just posted request for definite deadline’
I have to say, it’s hard to know what’s happening anytime with Nozbe stuff. I would understand a day or two but time just keeps on marching on.
Seems to me more happens with the multiple user accounts because they pay more and there are probably more of them.
Where is the problem? We have a working beta release since a couple of weeks, and the techs have found some problems in the final release. A situation you ‘ll find in nearly every lifecycle of a software product.
I think, it is all right to release the final version without known bugs.
@ Delfina – thank you for your support. I know that it is realy difficult for a software developer to give an exact timeline for a project.
Best Regards
Frank
@Frank Rothmann
“Where is the problem? We have a working beta release”
I think many would dispute the ‘working’. My impression is that as a beta it seems more lacking in functionality and to struggle with the variety of android devices then you would have expected.
“....since a couple of weeks”
It was released 8 weeks ago, not 2. I think the problems associated with the beta were made worse by an absolute determination to release by the end of March. And this pressure was created to a large degree by Nozbe persistently telling users throughout most of 2010 that the app was on its way – when it clearly was not.
“and the techs have found some problems in the final release.”
I’d love to think this is a final release, but I don’t belive it for an instant. I suspect it will be missing functionality and there will still be bugs. I perceive Nozbe going through a learning curb on Android. The first Nozbe iPhone app was a disaster – things only got better when third party specialists became involved.
“A situation you ‘ll find in nearly every lifecycle of a software product.”
Yes, but effective project management allows for such difficulties and factors them into timescales. I think anybody who who has looked at this forum and the blogs over a period of time does not see incredible project management at work. We see the spirit to do things (not always clearly articulated) and dates which for the most part are always missed.
“I think, it is all right to release the final version without known bugs.”
There will be bugs, features will not be complete – happy to apologise big time if neither of these prove the case.
The fundamental issue here is about communication and project management/delivery – recurring themes on the forum.
Can you pls confirm that in the next release it will be possible to move the app to sd? For those of us on an HTC Desire with ~ 100Mb for apps, ~7mb on a single app is very expensive . . . Thanks!
@ BruceMarriott
Your point on the communication was in fact main focus of my discussion this week with Michael. We do agree with you this is about the most important aspect we need to improve. I do trust that we’ll be able to correct this with time (hopefully, soon).
@ David Conroy
the answer is Yes
Could you please give us a date for the update.
@Delfina Thank you for responding – good to hear that you are all on the case
@Delfina – thanks for info – pleased to hear it will have app2sd!
Can you advise on release date? thanks!!
@all. I’m sorry for lack of my posting here, but I simply had no news. I still do not have a final date for it. If the update was to be released today it would (of what I hear) contain 2 minor issues.
Hi,
Since this morning I can’t login with my android app. I just get communication problems. The Ipad app works fine. Is there a problem at the server? All other android apps works.
Unfortunately Android Market says that it isn’t compatible with my HTC Wildfire (aka HTC Buzz). Are there any plans to make it work with small screen phones like mine?
I’m getting the communication error as well on my Droid X.
I’m also receiving the communication error on the HTC EVO
Count me in with the communication error on EVO. I also tried the other nozbe apps in the market…they have problems too. Something died…what’s up? this is not good.
I’m also receiving the communication error on the Moto XT800
@ David Cornish. We are planning to make it compatible with not standard size screen devises, but it will take a while (I know how you feel I have Moto Flipout).
@ all those experiencing ‘communication error”. We are aware of the issue. The tech is working already on resolving the it.
I’m getting the communication error on HTC EVO also.
Just a vent – having the android app pulled out from underneath me really stinks. We are approaching 2 days of being completely out of service. I hope someone lights a fire under the person that is working on this.
I’m absolutely angry!
Since 3 days it is not possible to get a connection with the android app! Some days ago I just wrote, that I can understand a delay in the devbelopment of the android app, but now, nothing has changed with the app, only that I can’t use the beta anymore, I’m not shure, that the nozbe app is the right choice for me. I paid for a family plan a lot of money, because since one year Michael promised an android solution. The only thing I got is a broken app, and a lot of mails from michael which told us, how easy it is to get things done with nozbe and gtd. No official statement about the android disaster.
PLEASE get your job done!
“PLEASE get your job done!” Love it
Welcome to the joy of tracking Noze development @FrankRothmann! Initial understanding that sometimes these things happen in life dissolves away over time as you realise these things always seem to happen at Nozbe and everything is late… though nobody ever knows how late.
Never mind, at some point Michael will be along with a really exciting message about it all being worth the wait. Yeah, yeah.
@Bruce
What should I say, you ‘re absolutely right.
:)
Nozbe is working again on my EVO!!
I truly doubt that Nozbe people are using GTD. They never get it right! I want my money back. Why is Michael not saying anything? Are you guys not working together? Do you guys hate each other? Are Polish people lazy and always break promises? How can I get anything done when the app never works as promised? Ahhh…
I have moved back to toodledo, despite being paid through the end of the year. I find that constantly checking the forum for tidbits on android development is counterproductive and frustrating. I have not given up entirely on Nozbe, but I paid for a year in January on the promise that the android app was due out any day. It finally rolled out in the end of March. Two months later there is still not an update. I have seen applications go from concept to reality in 2 months, I find it hard to believe that if this was a top priority that something would not have been out by now. I use a keyboard phone, so the landscape issue is major. Just my 2 cents. I wish the Nozbe team the best, but it seems that egos and communications issues are preventing Nozbe, from reaching its full potential.
My htc app is alsoworking again. I hope Michael takes a look to the last posts, and we can get a statement from him abut the situation. After all, the web app and the ipad app are ok, the problem is the project management of nozbe. it is realy not helpfull to hear about the great gtd-way of nozbe, when the internal projects run out time. keeping projects in time is a major issue of good projectmanagement. I hope nozbe will make more efforts to the main issues and less in great marketing. But, by the way, I’m shure that polish people also works hard and make a good job.
“...the problem is the project management of nozbe”.
Yes.
I doubt there is anybody actually called a Project Manager and doing the function at least part time. That is somebody who thinks what exactly will be in the next phase of the job (and does not chop and change all the time), thinks about how long it will take, allows for the capability of the staff (do they really and deeply know Android or are they on a learning curve and so need extra time?), formulates a proper test strategy, adds contingency and when the job is done is held to account for delivering something that works on time (hooray) or not (black mark and too may black marks is career inhibiting). A project manager would also be Delfina’s first and proper point of contact into what the ‘techs’ are doing. The PM would know what’s in the project and what is not (none of that “I don’t know, the techs won’t say” stuff, and also sensible answers on progress against timescales.
With all this underpinning sorted communication about what’s happening becomes much easier.
Of course I didn’t mean to bash all of the Polish people and I do apologize for the remark there.
Though, I do want to use Nozbe because it is one of the best tools that suit my needs, so I want to get my moneys worth and get things done.
I love it, so that’s why I am writing this comment. If I didn’t care or if there was a replacement, I wouldn’t write anything here. That’s how much I like and depend on Nozbe.
I am a new user to both Nozbe and the android app. I arrange things on the computer and then sync android. It seems that android is overwriting my changes and items are being reutrned to my next actions list when I had deleted them off. How can I track this to make a more productive post to the PTB?
@ Lea-ann. Please do email us on this at support@nozbe.com. It is possible I will need to ask you for more details.
@Kazuyak. It is all easier said then done. You can bash all you want, but it is not going to speed things up. Would rather have a trash release fast? or something really worked out and though out with time?
I’m going to leave your remark about my compatriots without comment.
At this point I know that the issue with login has been removed and that the new beta version is to be released today, latest tomorrow…
Messengers always get beaten, it seems. sigh
Thanks everyone for the comments and sorry for the delay with this release.
We have fixed the problem with syncing with Android app (SSL certificate problem was a bug in Android phones prior to 2.3) and we are finishing testing of the newest update to the Android app. Yesterday we uncovered a bug we’re fixing now and once fixed we’ll ship the final build to Android market. Hopefully today.
We are in the middle of a big strategy shift in Nozbe – we’re building underlying technology that already powers our Android client and will also power our new mobile Nozbe web site (aka updated iNozbe) that will work across all smartphones, and our new Desktop apps for Windows and Macs. And we do it all, while still keeping the Nozbe.com app stable and updated with new features (and new design to be launched in a 1-2 weeks).
All projects depend on each other and that was the reason Android app slipped a little, but we’re back on track.
With all clients synced and deployed by the end of the summer Nozbe will be the only professional project management tool offering such a suite of apps synced together – and all of these new apps will be free for all our customers. We are building a seamless experience here for you and it’s going to be great (and definitely worth the wait).
One more thing – we all work in Nozbe – so we can’t wait for the new things as well here – only developers and myself have access to early builds of things (and we use dummy data for it) so the whole company uses the same Nozbe apps and web apps as you guys – that’s why the pressure to ship is both external and internal here in Nozbe.
Having said that, thanks for your support and stay tuned for the Android update finally coming to you and for the new goodies we’ll ship this month. You won’t be disappointed :-)
Delfina, many thanks for being the messenger of news, whether good or bad. I, and I believe many others, appreciate your help.
Thank you for the update. I was furious because ipaid good money for my service. I know android itself is new and there are many problems in making a working app. I just wanted an update of the current situation, bugs come out schedules change, but if you really care about the customers, you would treat them with respect, apology, and current updates of situation with some new schedules. You shouldn’t say I don’t know and leave the customers hopless.
Michael:
I can’t be the only one to think I’ve heard such fine words about the future before. You are the Michael that kept saying an Android app would be along shortly for much of 2010. The Michael who in a September roadmap blog (giving us “a sneak peak at what’s coming to Nozbe this Fall”) didn’t mention an Android app at all but instead talked about a “Universal mobile app”. The Michael who hired in a new developer at the beginning of November and told us the Android app would be along later in the month (though there was a “hopefully” attached!) etc. So I want to belive your stories but I struggle based on the past and what actually happened to timescales and strategy. I never get the feeling of really thought about timescales in any of your announcements – sorry but I don’t.
It is good to hear more about the plans for the platform. However I don’t think many people wanting to hear details of Nozbe futures will think to look at the end of a 90 posts long thread about Android Beta tests.
A consistent message has been for Nozbe to be less chaotic in the way it makes its plans known. So why not create a page at:
http://www.nozbe.com/futures
and update it and report against it regularly so there is one place that people can go to see what is coming up, and the approximate timescales. You and Delfina can still post relevant information on individual threads of course.
I bother with all this because I want to see Nozbe do well – really do.
Hi Everyone,
I just made the transition from Nozbe for iPhone (which I loved) to Nozbe for Android. I am currently using the Samsung Infuse. The challenge is that I cannot add notes to any of my tasks, which is a core piece that I use. I click on the “notes” button but it does not seem to do anything. Any suggestions? Is this a known issue?
Thanks!
The Andriod update is to be out within next few hours. It should support Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Delifina,
I’m excited to find out! It’s not a Galaxy Tab that I have just the Samsung Infuse, which is a smart phone. Hopefully the update covers that! :) Thanks!
Nozbe 1.1 is out and I have just tried on my HTC Desire. I find it very slow and unresponsive – for me its worse then the first version. Also seeing Run Time errors that I never saw before and have never seen in any of the regular apps I use. Huge size (7.8Mb)and the promised move to SD card does not work. I don’t spot any changes that make this app of use to me – the ability to juggle actions relative to one another. No joy to report any of this and I hope it works better for others.
Initial view – It works better on my Galaxy Tab. Only managed to use on a train with poor mobile reception so the sync seemed slow. Will play a little more when on WiFi.
v1.1 on my HTC Incredible is slightly faster than 1.0 but still very slow and clunky. I agree with BruceMarriott that the app must move to SD card (and 1.1 doesn’t).
I tried it out briefly last night and was satisfied that the “notes” section now works on my Samsung Infuse. Thank you for the update! It is a little slow (but the last version was as well when compared to the iPhone version) but I am assuming this will improve with time. Also, I noticed that the text size is much better when viewing tasks. Before, it was not showing anything.
One thing I did notice is that in calendar view, it is not showing any overdue tasks.
Thanks again for the update, and keep them coming!
Using the HTC EVO I’m seeing a lot of runtime errors as well. The error states “Cannot find function byDPI{object Object}
Hope this helps find the problem.
EllenSweeney – Yes I see the same error messages on my HTC Desire.
Okay was running into run time errors and bad data (Next Actions showing completed tasks as not completed from over a month ago). Logged out of the app (using settings/logout) and then logged back into Nozbe. It ran a “downloading intial data” process and now all is good. It works as I would expect it to.
Still very slow on my Droidx though.
When I say slow, using a stopwatch, I clocked it as 25 seconds to open Next Actions.
Logged out of app and back in, still getting all kinds of runtime errors.
Thanks ChrisShaul: I just logged out and in again and it seems a little quicker, though still frustratingly slow compared to all the other apps on my phone. You just don’t know if you have correctly pressed a button or not as the seconds tick away. Like EllenSweeney I still see runtime errors. At the moment if it does what you need and you are desperate enough I guess you will persevere. It does not do what I need and so the decision to remove is easy. Will try again at next release. Nearly mid-June and I’m pretty despairing of the whole situation.
Hello All. I have passed this to our tech. Just for safety I would like to ask all those who have posted here to add the Andriod name they use. Thank you.
HTC desire – cannot move to SD despite the changelog and despite your answer to me 25th May!
Also why have word auto complete on password?
When is the next update out? HTC Desire owners like me need ‘move to SD card’ and until that happens I need to uninstall other apps.
I need the Nozbe app to see what is happening when I’m out – to see next actions etc, and these work well.
The major bug though is in ability to enter any new projects as I keep getting runtime errors even before entering any information.
Not as important, but when will landscape be available. Nothing happens when I rotate the phone. As I say, not a biggie right now. Move to SD and input of new projects needed ASAP.
Thanks for what you (the entire Nozbe team) are doing, the whole Nozbe functionality is getting better. Looking forward to the new Interface and very much looking forward to a desktop version.
Thanks Delfina for keeping up with us. There are so many possible avenues for improvement raised here that it must be tough keeping track and finding which fits best with your planned improvements. Thanks for being nice when we gripe and groan :-)
No one is perfect.
@ both Davids here. I will do my best to get our tech guys to look at this. Desire is one of those more problematic mobiles (but it is not such a nightmare like Moto- Flipout that I have).
In respect to SD I believe you can download the apps to SD and run it from there.. at least that’s how I have been using it.
As for the runtime error it seems there are several different ones occurring. What would help big time if you could note down the type of error you are getting and post it here or to support@nozbe.com
Delfina: “In respect to SD I believe you can download the apps to SD and run it from there.. at least that’s how I have been using it.”
This is not usual. We go to the Android market place and download the app and from within the Android Settings > Applications dialogue we are used to seeing a “Move to SD” option.
If you are saying this should all be handled another way can you tell us in detail or point at a page which covers in detail please? Many thanks.
Hello Bruce,
The technician confirmed that it can be installed on SD. However I will check with him how it should be done (my android is unsupported yet it’s is one of our test devises so I get the file per email and can only put it on SD.. which is not a normal download way by any means). Please do hold on.
Hi Delfina, to answer your previous question, I’m using the Samsung Inspire.
Roger that, Dan. I will note it to Paul our Andriod developer ;-)
Hi all,
Just dropped by to say I downloaded the latest version of the Nozbe android app and it fairly flies along on my HTC Desire HD. Great work, this definitely puts Nozbe ahead of the competition. The monthly fees are a bit high but the cheaper alternatives don’t have the same level of functionality. With the news that the web app is also going to get a face lift I will most likely sign up full time. Good job all round everyone.
Hi, Using the Sprint HTC EVO and I can’t put it on the SD card, also still receiving runtime errors. Thanks
Using Samsung Fascinate and any time I try to add a project or add items to an existing project Nozbe crashes. I want to love this app. Crashes are killing me though!
Any ideas?
Can sonmeone please explain how to get this to work on an htc desire running off sd card – some guidance would be useful here – how do i download the app without going via mktplace? And more importantly why can’t the one in mktplace have movetosd as described.
I’m very glad to see an Android app in beta testing. Thank you. The issue described below, involving an inability to create a new project using the Android app, is the only thing stopping me from going back to using the Nozbe service I paid for. (Right now, I’m using ActionComplete, but I would much rather use Nozbe).
When I try to create a new project in the Nozbe for Android beta app on my Droid Incredible (via Verizon mobile service carrier), I see the following and eventually invoke the Runtime Error described below. I have no problem creating new projects via the web interface. Also, I no longer us an Android task killer app, ever since I read something suggesting that such things can cause Android apps to stop performing as designed.
The New project window appears with the “Cancel” button on the left and the “Save” button on the right. Between them is the label “New…”. The area below this is completely blank. I assume it is supposed to contain a field into which I would enter the name of my new project with the “more options…” button below that (as I see in the New Context window).
If I touch the Cancel or Save buttons that appear to the left and right of the label “New…”, they turn green (to indicate that I’ve pressed them) but nothing else happens. In fact, the only way to leave this screen is to hit the back button on my phone, which invokes the following runtime error. (I suspect that the content of this error speaks volumes to someone with programming knowledge. I hope it helps.)
Runtime Error
Location: [0,0] null
Message: TypeError: Cannot find function byDPI in object [object Object].
Source: <This Runtime error field is blank>
<button labeled “Kill”> <button labeled “Continue”>
Thank you for creating this beta version of the Android app. I would like to switch back to Nozbe as my exclusive GTD smartphone app once I can create a new project on the phone. Otherwise, it looks great to me.
Sincerely
ScienceGuy
I neglected to mention what happens when I click the Kill and Continue buttons on the Runtime Error window I described in my previous post.
If I touch the Continue button it goes back to the Projects list with no new project added. (Once, I see an Alert that said “Enter Project name” before the Projects list appeared, but I have not been able to make the Alert appear again.)
If I touch the kill button, the app restarts immediately with no further error messages.
Hope that helps.
I’m seeing the exact same behavior as described by Paul. This seems like a pretty big problem to allow to go without a comment from Nozbe staff or application update.
Delfina
It’s a week since you/Nozbe last said anything specific about the recent release (I discount Michael’s blog pronouncements that its “gorgeous” and “the best Android app ever”). It looks pretty clear that Beta 1.1 is not as good as we all imagined it would be.
What’s the plan?
Last time (for Beta 1) not much was said about the approach and in the end we waited 12 weeks – a very long time indeed – which gave us more functionality and still a lot of bugs. I don’t think that (unstated) strategy was a good one.
I’m hoping that Nozbe will say there is a freeze on adding functionality and that every 2 weeks, from here on, a new release will come out with the latest bug fixes in. That should continue until all is fine. Then, with a firm base, add in more capability.
That would be a credible strategy and well received I think. My worry is that Nozbe has just committed to deliver many things in July – I suspect on the assumption that Android was more or less fine and so the techies concerned would be mostly free to do other things for the July deadlines…
@ Bruce. Of what I know in the next update that is planned for early July, the concentration of effort will be placed on removing of existing bugs.
As for all those that run into error message. Please do make sure to send them all to support@nozbe.com providing us with as much details as possible. What is needed is 1. exact error message 2. your device specification (name and model + Andriod version run). Now please give me a sec to explain this.
In the team we have 8 different Andriod devices. On 5 the program runs without a problem, on 1 there is occasional issue with connection (which may well be cause by problems with the network itself), and on 2 it does not run at all… on those 2 which are 2 different brands of mobiles we get 4-5 different types of ‘runtime error” and not always it is the same error on the same devise. Thus it is very hard to foresee what it is on your devises without cooperation on your side.
“Of what I know in the next update that is planned for early July…” – super, I’m now totally reassured.
Email sent. Hoping to get this worked out sooner rather than later. Thanks Delfina.
Delfina: We are now beyond “early July” – so what’s the new Nozbe date for when the Android App will be updated to fix at least some of the known bugs? Rather then a “Of what I know…” type answer could you please actually ask the project manager for a definitive answer. That would be really helpful. Many thanks.
Hello Bruce,
I’m sorry but I will not lie to you just to give you a date I do not have. “of what I know” is usually said that to best of my knowledge…that was the information I had at the time of writing it.
I know for sure that the new update is going to deal with some of the known bugs… but I do not have a list of those yet. That is the top priority. Now as for the date I will do my best to get some concrete out of your Andriod technician.
Thanks Delfina. I don’t think you should ever give a timescales based on your view or what you might overhear in passing. I think you should always ask the project manager. If they can’t be bothered to say, or don’t know, or feel its a daft question, that would be a shame (and would explain a lot about why Nozbe misses so many timescales…)
I, too, cannot create a new project on my Android Nozbe on my new Motorola Xpert device. Seeing comments above, I’m wondering if it’s a Motoblur/Motorola thing that wreaking havoc with my new phone. But I can’t kill the program once open, and I get a lot of mean messages. : ) Would be great to create a project.
@ Burce the times I provide are not based on what I overhear…we have no physical way of overhearing anything to be honest.. we do not work at normal office.
What I provide you with is what I get in response to my direct question on given matter.
Now after last talk with technicians (yesterday) I have been promised that new update will be out this week.
And as for why Nozbe misses on the timescales… simple our whole team is 8 people (4 support, 3 tech + Michael) we are in process of hiring another technician/s to speed up matters as we are aware we can’t sustain the current pase any-longer.. we need more speed.
@ Thomas. Blur might in fact have something to do with that.. I also use Motorola and also have the very same issue (actually they are experimenting on mine). I will point his out to our tech. It might be of help. Thank you.
@Delfina
1) Thank you for coming back – much appreciated.
2) The reason Nozbe miss timescales is because the project manager function of planning does not seem to happen. Agree more speed would always be nice and an extra person will help, but that alone won’t correct the lack of planning that results in bad dates being given.
Just the latest example. Michael on a blog (about the Mac Beta) said 2 days ago “Thanks everyone! We’ll be shipping the beta2 and the Windows beta tomorrow at the latest. Stay tuned :-)”. And we all stayed tuned yesterday (me for Windows) and absolutely nothing happened.
If Michael had thought then he’d have said the new version “should go live over the next few days” and also put a reminder in his his Nozbe system that in 4 days if nothing had happened then he’d update people about the problem and the revised timescales.
Sigh…. Bruce all I can do is apologize and hope that your post along with my ‘banging’ will help the matters improve.
I know I possibly shouldn’t be saying this, but there is no point in hiding what is obvious to many if not all. Communication with users is something that we seriously need to improve. And deadlines is something we honestly need to keep.
I believe that part of the problem here is the inherited optimism of the team at large and that it gets crushed often by hard reality of ‘when you change something, it is highly likely to influence other parts of the system, and although the change seems like a tiny thing … it may create many unexpected consequences”. I’m not trying there to sweep the problem under the carpet or give excuses, and I hope my explantation comes out clear across….
Our tech boys honestly would like to keep their deadline, no bad intentions on their side here, but reality gives their optimism a nasty kick.
My big hope is that the increase in size of the tech team planned for this summer (from 3+ Michael to 5/6 +Michael) will have positive impact on the matter and that promised deadline will be met; or at least there will be a better communication of moving them.
As to the communication issue it is my hope and something I’m trying my best to solve. I pray I can succeed, as believe me it is not pleasant when I have to bring bad news to you all or I can’t hold to what I have said here or in emails. I view this as personal failure, although there is not much I can do except relay to you information/deadlines to best of my knowledge.
Once again I sincerely apologize on behalf of whole team, and my own especially.
Thanks everyone for your great support and for being fantastic Nozbe users. Believe me, your passion for Nozbe mixed with our drive to deliver you the best app possible makes the difference.
This new strategy of having several apps that sync with each other is a new thing for us. It basically means we need to build several products from scratch in a matter of a few months. For a small team like ours it’s a big deal.
I do apologize for the delays in shipping the Android client and for the missed deadlines. We had to re-organize our small team the last two weeks to make sure we have folks working on the native PC and Mac app and the Android phone app. Both of these apps (the desktop app and the Android app) are our flagship products now and we want to make sure they are great.
Next week we’ll post updates here in this thread about the Android app and we’ll let you know when the next version is shipping. We’re trying to build one as soon as possible.
I’d like to ask you all for help
To help us address the issues with your phones directly please post your Android phone details in this new thread
We’ll still be discussing issues here, but in this other thread we’d like to know your phone details so that we can address them directly.
Thanks so much again for being our fantastic Nozbe users and for being so supportive and so motivating for us. We love you guys and we promise to do our best not to disappoint you guys anymore. Our Android client and our native apps are our main focus now and we want to make sure that this summer we’ll nail them and make them perfect for you all.
@Delfina: It’s a deep sigh all around I think. Nozbe need to move from constantly giving out optimistic timescales, that are hardly every met, to thought about plans with contingency added. Anyway enough – this has all been said in many different ways by many people I think. I’m as tired of not believing anything Nozbe says around timescales (and promised functionality) as you are of having it pointed out I’m sure! I’ll take a rest from the forum for a while.
@Michael: Good to see you focusing on all this.
Posted again in the correct place…
I hope I am wrong but I can’t find any way to hand sort the Next Actions list – or any list. So I can’t make an action, say in the middle of the list, the top one – as I can in the pc web version. I believe the iPhone app has the ability to hand sort also.
It’s the main reason I’m with Nozbe (and not one of the others that always insist on presenting items in some rigid priority and/or date order). As with Frank’s app if this isn’t there its not something for me. I appreciate others mileage will vary.
Just in case it is in any way relevent – I’m using an HTC Desire.
