It would be very nice if we could sort next actions based on date or even context. I often have a next action for a project to do on a specific day. I don’t really want to see it at the top of the list before that day arrives.
thanks.
Comments:
yeah i would agree.
our list should not just by default put next actions at the top.

Sorting is one of thing we are working on so any ideas are welcomed.
Sometimes I’m tempted to over-organize my GTD lists and when I do I have to re-focus on context.
But… I do use action dates as a gentle reminder of an action must be completed by a specific date because of a contractual agreement.
Being able to sort actions by date and sorting completed actions to the bottom of the list (or being able to hide them) would be helpful. Thanks.
Here again I will be working this weekend on compiling a list of suggestions on the sorting and filtering. I will add your ideas to the list and discuss with the rest what can/can’t be done and if so how we see it. I believe Michael will be posting a ‘road map” of type in blog for you all to know what is coming up approximately when.
+1
based on what Michael masin said – the contexts and colors concept of giving each context a different color ( like when you buy a pack of 5 differnt color highlighters) and then each task will be represented by the color of the context it is in.
honestly – its not hard to get around the fact that we can add more than one ccontext.
think about it – based on gps coordinates you can figure out what context we are closest to, or which one we did our last task in – useing that knowledge to figure out the most relevant context to display the color of task s in that have multiple contexts.
It will not be that hard and will keep us also focused on where we are and not have to think about it.
I personally would love to see a lot less thinking need to go into our use of nozbe.
it would be amazing.
Hi Delfina:
What works really well for me is to filter next actions by label. That is the primary reason I switched from Toodledo to Nozbe. It works great for me.
Providing a similar drop-down box to filter next actions by context would be a great addition!
While you are add it, could you please add these two functions to the iPhone app as well?
Thanks!
Mark
@ Mark
all the features that are/will be in Nozbe on-line will also appear sooner or later on iPhone and iPad applications. Our developer is adding new features gradually and wants to catch up with the on-line version soon. I know that in next update EN integration is coming. Anyway what I mean to say is that the order is 1st on-line then the mobile apps.
Thanks!
Next Action sorting and improved filtering is critical for me too, and I am glad you are working on solutions for this.
I have a couple of suggestions that might help:
(1) Need a solution for Completed Actions
I find the clutter of completed actions one of the most frustrating things on the next action screen, but I also like being able to see what I have done. I can think of several solutions to this, some of which have probably already been suggested:
a) a sort button that puts completed actions at the top, bottom or hides them. I do this manually, but it is a waste of time
b) having a third option for placing new actions (i.e. the arrow that lets you choose whether to create a new action at the top or bottom), with the third option to the effect of “create below/above completed actions”. That way once completed actions are sorted with completed actions at the top or bottom, priority new actions don’t get lost away from your active list of actions. Without this I find I am endlessly dragging items around above or below completed actions.
(2) Different areas on screen or categories for Next Actions, or improved filtering
At the beginning of my day or week I sort (by dragging) my next actions into areas on the screen which I separate by an action labeled “——[Category]——” which I use to separate the actions. My categories are:
- “Quick actions” – quick actions that I can do at any time when I have time spare
- “Ordered Actions” – my short list of actions that I plan to do today and that I have thought about the order of doing them. i.e. my next 3 or 5 actions
- “Actions today” – actions I plan/need to do today that are not in the sorted actions yet
- the rest – everything else that doesn’t fit into these categories
If I don’t sort my Next Actions I find that I am overwhelmed by the number next actions that are unrelated and not as high priority.
If the filtering feature allowed for multiple simultaneous choices then this could be easily handled through contexts. i.e. select “Office” + “Actions Today” and you can just work on those you must get through today. But without the filter improvement this won’t work properly.
Thanks for all of your efforts to improve Nozbe.
@ LaChlan.
Thank you for your suggestions. I will certainly copy them for the rest of the team and we’ll see what and how can be implemented.
In a sorting/filtering discussion, I’d like to interject a question about “duration”. I’m wondering if there’s a way to sort or filter for them?
‘If I have 30 minutes before a call/meeting, which “Next Action” could I do?’ GTD methodology discussions refer to duration and effort. If we cannot filter or sort for duration, why enter it in the first place?
+1 sort by date and context – also ability to filter in all situations not just next actions
Completed tasks are dropping to the bottom of the list this morning. Thank you, that’s great!
I was about to post the notice on this ;-)
I’ve got to be able to sort by task name. I keep due dates on my calendar so all the date specific stuff is meaningless to me.
sort by context and then by due date within context of the NA list with a little space between each context would be heavanly as this allows us to first think about what context we are in and then about what task we can do within that context.
+1 sort by date and context – also ability to filter in all situations not just next actions (again).
We’ve had lots of eyecandy changes over the last few months, this would be a real improvement to funtionality for many people – very frustrating that nothing has happened.
I just need alpha sort. Any news?
Unfortunately I do not have any news for you in this respect. I’m sorry
I’m sorry, too. It looks like this has been asked for by many users for a while now with no movement. It’s a deal breaker for me. There are some nice features in Nozbe but I have to be able to sort.
Delfina – would you be able to get some news for us from the developer, please?

+1 sorting next actions by context, project and date is key
+1 sorting my next actions: The gap here is a big usability issue…
If I am going to bother to put dates on everything, I want it sorted by date, always. Next actions should be by date, my calendar should show items by time.
Another plea for sorting.
+1 for sorting, especially by date due
Not in our lifetimes.
Well then you will have to die fast Michael, because I hear this is one of the 1st areas to be worked on in desktop.
