I keep checking back to see if Nozbe finally has changed their setup to support GTD, but it’s not done.
I am amazed on how many people use Nozbe and would think that many have made the same suggestions to get it updated.
No Inbox
No Next List (Support for single NA’s)
No Waiting For List
No Someday/Maybe List
Currently everything in Nozbe is a Project, which is NOT GTD.
Has anyone else suggested for Nozbe to actually change their UI to support True GTD?
I love the Evernote and Dropbox integration. I like many things about Nozbe except that it’s not setup for Real GTD.
Just wondering.
Comments:
@ Marisa thank you of providing this feedback to Damian.
Great response Marisa. Sometimes we just need to think different with GTD. I’ve done many of the things you’ve suggested and it works great. I would also like to see more filter options, especially for printing. John
I often think that we all spend a long time looking for the ‘perfect’ GTD app, but I imagine that we all have slightly different ‘takes’ on GTD. We tend to ignore or avoid the bits that don’t seem to apply or don’t work for us, but need other things that maybe aren’t strictly GTD according to other people. I think that there comes a time, having done all the research you can, where you just have to plump for the system that most fits your needs, and then make some small adjustments that you can live with to make it all work for you. After all, it’s not like we are all going for a GTD examination. The important thing is which system gets more stuff done, for you.
Marisa, I agree. Further the system you want today will not be the system you want tomorrow. Personally I find that as I learn and develop the habits that GTD recommends, I find new levels. David Allen has referred to this a peeling the layers of an onion. Each layer takes you to another level.
Damian, I agree with you to a large extent.
A year or so ago, I was testing every GTD app out there – including your system for Tododoo. At some point I decided this was all wasting time I could use for something more useful.
I settled on Nozbe as something that would work for me. Is it perfect? Heck no! As you point out, it misses several GTD concepts (that would be easy to implement, if Michael chose to) and the iPhone app seems to have been abandoned.
After a year, I switched from the yearly plan to monthly, expecting to find something better.
I’ve not had time to check any other GTD app for ages. I tried Nivanna, but it clearly wasn’t ready.
I don’t see much chance of Michael making Nozbe more like GTD but I’m hanging in at the moment.
@david – I have for same reason as you been looking at Nirvana. What do you mean when saying it is not ready?
Proximo, I’m traditionally a Nirvana user, but have been trying out Nozbe, mainly for the collaborative aspect of Nozbe that Nirvana doesn’t have. Surprisingly to me, I’m actually preferring Nozbe at the moment, mainly because it’s operation is slicker (laid out better, more intuitive) and it seems to work better with less glitches. I have an inbox, so that’s not an issue. I made a project called “Miscellaneous” that holds my single actions and to me, it works just like the next list in Nirvana for containing single actions. I find the tag for “waiting for” to work ok, too. I do miss the someday list from Nirvana. Not sure which one I’ll stick with, but I find that I can make Nozbe as much GTD as Nirvana (for my use).
GTD is meant to be a framework for being more productive. I really don’t think that if you edit one aspect of GTD, you’re less of a practitioner. For me, Nozbe is just the thing to keep my projects in order.
I have been operating GTD for several years now, and Nozbe is the closest thing I have found to a working GTD app. I find the lack of filtering leaves me overwhelmed with NAs, but that’s partly my own fault for taking-on so much. Nozbe can’t do anything about that.
Using Nozbe, I do a daily review and put all the next days tasks in my diary (10 minute spacings). The amount I get done using the diary approach is astonishing compared to if I don’t. I never do it futher ahead than the following day beacuse I’d just end-up wasting time shuffling tasks. It really forces my pace, forces me to do the jobs I don’t like doing, and gives me a feeling of satisfaction.
Right… tea-break over!
GTD is GTD....and although there is a great deal to love about Nozbe, It is not GTD.
David Allen clearly states that Context are only to be use as Context.
According to David Allen, a context describes the tool, location or person that is required to be able to complete an action.
David Allen clearly states not to use context in the manner that Marisa describes. It is a nice workaround.
So far I think Toodledo ‘s new rebuild is the closest I have found to being pure GTD.
Of the 8 or so software solutions and apps I have tried, they all seem to be missing just one component, and it is a different component with each solution.
I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy guy….but it is almost like they are all afraid to make a pure GDT app because if they do, they will be sued by David Allen.
I like Nozbe , it is a really cool web 2.0 application….but it needs workarounds to be GTD.
Please don’t tell me that a bicycle is a car. lol
At least bikes and cars are similar, and real, contexts :)
I use Nozbe, and have done the following:
You can make any project your Inbox, so I have a project called Inbox which I have designated this way. I don’t have a label for this one so it is ‘outside’ my Areas and operates exactly like most other apps Inboxes.
I use the star to designate Next Actions
I have a ‘context’ called ‘Waiting for’ same for ‘Someday’. In Nozbe you are allowed to use more than one ‘context’. It’s really more like a tag so I can use ‘waiting for’ and ‘work’ on the same task.
In every label (Area) I have a single actions project eg Single Actions Home, single actions social etc.
These are all workarounds, but I find that the integration of Evernote & Dropbox outweigh (for me) the inconvenience of having to work around the other things. I also like the email to Nozbe functions and the Twitter to Nozbe.
For me, the worst thing is the lack of filtering options, slicing & dicing tasks makes them easier & quicker to do. Apparently they are working on that, so hopefully …
