OK, so we have our new logo and most of the commenters actually like it. Now it’s time to preview some of the features we’re cooking for you for the final 2.0 version of our Nozbe software.
Multiple contexts per Action and Comments

Yes, you’ve been asking for these for a very long time and now we’ve got them for you! These are two of the most-requested features and now you can test both in Nozbe 2.0 beta:
Multiple Contexts per Action

Having an action that belongs to two or more contexts? Want to attach a context like “Home” and “Wife” to the same action? Or “Office” and “Boss”? Now you can!
There you go – add more contexts to actions, test these and let me know in the comments if you like what you’re seeing.
Note: due to backward compatibility issues, in “Nozbe Classic” this feature is not available and only the first context counts. Same applies to all the other front-ends of Nozbe and the iPhone app. You can only test this functionality by clicking to “Nozbe 2.0 beta” in your Nozbe account.
Comments on Actions

Many of you asked to add notes to actions and while I knew where you were coming from, I wasn’t convinced – now “Comments” adds a whole new dimension to this:
Please test the new features and let me know if you like them. Remember, they are available only in Nozbe 2.0 beta and they are still in the testing phase.
Big kudos to our chief developer Tom for pulling these two features off at an outstanding pace.
Do you feel the wind of change in Nozbe now? Don’t be shy and let us know what you think about these enhancements!

Mh, Comments are One Offs ? I’m not able to update or delete them right now. I’d like to update/edit my comments or @min. delete them
btw: I’m missing the ProjectName per Task and the ability to link to it.
I hope you are planning to upgrade the iphone client to support these features and that the release of the updated client will coincide with the release of the 2.0 web interface
Multiple contexts are definitely the feature I missed most, it’s nice
to see them coming.
Still, I am not 100% sure whether the current implementation handles
them correctly. It could make sense to add some hierarchy.
Let me give an example. I use 3 computers. There are tasks which can
be done on any of them (say, anything which needs just a browser).
And there are tasks which require specific one (say, the one with
development environment installed).
To date I had to use 4 contexts – “work-comp”, “home-comp”, “laptop”,
and “computer”, putting actions which can be done anywhere to
“computer”, and remaining to appropriate specific context, and
checking both “home-comp” and “computer” while on my home desktop.
Now, with multiple contexts I can throw away “computer” and assign
such actions to all 3 computers.
But that’s a) tedious (every “portable” action requires having 3
contexts assigned) and b) troublesome if I add new computer to the
picture (would need to find all multi-context actions and add one more
context to them).
It would be sweeter if I could define some hierarchy. Say – mark that
“computer” context belongs to “work-comp”, “home-comp”, and “laptop”.
Then, I would assign “do-anywhere” actions to “computer” but the system
would show me them with “work-comp” selected (for example). And if I
added “netbook”, I would onloy need to mark that “computer” belongs to
“netbook” too.
I non-geeky context, very similar hierarchy would make sense for
shopping places…
It’s not a replacement for individual multi-context (which also can
make sense very often), but just another view.
PS One could also think about it a bit differently, making a “computer”
sth like “context tag”, and making it possible to assign such “tags”
to actions (but so they are dynamic and respond to the tag redefinition).
I love the new comment feature. However, hypertext links are still broken in Action titles and comments. Advanced formatting works, though. They work fine (in Action titles) in Classic Nozbe.
Just realized that there is no way to edit a comment once it’s been applied. Any plans to change this?
Michael – any guesstimate as to when you’ll have this rolled out with the new UI? I know you guys are working on it….BUT....its been a while
As I wrote in the Newsletter and on the forum, we’ll be rolling out new features in June and hopefully by this time we’ll have the design ready and we’ll roll it out June/July (somewhere there) – we’re working hard now on both design and new features and you’ll see more announcements on this blog about these.
I thought you’d be happy that we’ve rolled both of the most-requested features at the same time (contexts and comments)
What about showing Next Actions filtered by multiple contexts? (I.e. I want to see all Next Actions with HomeOffice, computer, OR phone)
I like the idea of assigning multiple contexts to a particular action, but in many cases I work in multiple contexts at the same time. For example, lets say my Next Actions list contains items with contexts such as HomeOffice, Computer, & Phone. When I’m creating each action I think about what I need to complete that action. I.E. I need my filing cabinet in my HomeOffice for this task, my computer for another task (which could be physically anywhere I have my laptop), and then I need my phone for another set of tasks which again could be anywhere I have my phone (in the car, at a friend’s house, etc.
Now, when I’m actually in my HomeOffice, I’d like to bring up my Next Actions and then choose all of the contexts that apply. I.E. I have my filing cabinet, so HomeOffice applies. I have my computer and phone, so those contexts apply.
When I’m working at a temporary location with my computer and phone I want those contexts to apply.
Unless I am missing something, the way it works now I can’t focus on the tasks I can do right now. Either I get all Next Actions including some that I can’t work on in that moment or I can filter by a single context and not show all Next Actions I could possibly work on.
Filtering of Next actions has been done already in Nozbe 1.0 and will be implemented in Nozbe 2.0 as well. But a little differently. Please be patient, you’ll love it and it’ll work very well for you, Jeremy.
Thanks for the response Michael. I have found that Nozbe works very well for the way that I use GTD with only a few minor exceptions. I’m looking forward to the new release. Thanks!
Joseph is entire correct. The new features are very good but hypertext links are still broken in Action titles and comments.
Just to remember that Remeber the Milk has this funcion (hypertext links) in notes.
I believe the solution to the multiple context issue is to do subset testing. This would test each task to see if the task’s contexts are a subset of a given context set. So, the given context set:
home, computer, phone
would match tasks with these kinds of contexts:
home, phone
home, computer
home
phone
home, phone, computer
...etc
but NOT:
work
work, computer
...etc
Note: this is kind of testing is not possible with AND/OR/CONTAINS searching.
I would love to see this integrated!
Comments on Tasks is completely essential. I have started trialling the system today and I have created lots of tasks, with very long names, the system quietly truncated them and damages my information. Without the Notes feature I have nowhere to put all the text, so this is ESSENTIAL for me. If others don’t need this, I can only assume tasks are generally easy to describe with few words, I wish mine were!
Is it possible when printing out, to have the comments expanded out so they are included in the printout of any project. With comments not enabled on the iphone app and not printing out, I can’t see the comments under any actions unless I’m at my desk!
Very cool Michael. Love this feature.
