A kind-of Roadmap: where is Nozbe going?

Michael   Monday, September 20
Comments: 52

We’ve had a long debate about Feature Roadmap for Nozbe on the forums lately and since we’ve got lots of new Nozbe users coming to us every day, I wanted to give you a sneak peak at what’s coming to Nozbe this Fall:

  • Offline mode – you’ll be able to initially view and later even manage your projects, actions and contexts offline without any internet connection. Thanks to HTML5, Gears and other technologies, it will be possible in practically every modern browser without the need for any special plugins.
  • Universal mobile app that works with Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone and more… (yes, we know you need it and we’ll give it to you finally!)
  • Completed actions – better handling of completed actions and history on the web and on the iPhone and iPad
  • More core-GTD functinality like better Someday/Maybe support and Checklists
  • Yet more Gooogle support – after we’ve connected with Google Calendar, we’ll provide you with deeper Google integration
  • Deeper Evernote – we all love Evernote and we’ll try to dig deeper into the way we work with Evernote and give you the best integration ever.

This is what we’re working currently on. We can’t offer you a 1-year or 5-year plan – we’re 3.5 years in business and our plans have been changing quickly all of the time and the safest bet we can give you is a few months ahead of time.

What I can assure you is that:

we’ll keep on innovating to make sure you can get a lot more done

and now that we’ve had our record months in terms of signups and sales, we can dedicate more resources to give you the best productivity tool around.

One more thing – the above roadmap doesn’t include the minor features we’ll be introducing every week, like new color themes, better UI and a lot more…

Did we miss anything? Is there anything else you want to see in Nozbe in the months to come?

I’m one of those new Nozbe users. Two of the items on your list (Completed Actions and more core-GTD) are big ones for me. The others don’t make the top of my list but I understand they may be at the top of other’s lists. Most of my other wishes are small tweaks which I am posting or voting for in the forums.

:-)
Denis Guenther 20 Sep 10 15:35

what about integration of mindjet mindmanager. They have an api…

:-)
Marlon Candido Guerios 20 Sep 10 16:05

No words about the User Interface. I really like Nozbe features set and how it works, but the interface …

:-)
John N. Teeter 20 Sep 10 16:21

I am not sure where the issue of sorting by date falls, but hopefully it is one of those “minor” features you refer to here and not omitted. Really the ordering of the tasks in almost every screen is critical. I waste a lot of time every day opening up a consult and then having manually to re-order the list by date, when this should be done automatically or available as an option to be set – “order by …” Please tell me you have placed an important level of priority on this. Those 20 to 30 minutes I dedicate every day to re-order the list of tasks manually is wasted time.

:-)
Michael 20 Sep 10 17:02

John, good point – yes, these are small enhancements we’ll be adding to Nozbe very soon. Sorting is at the top priority of these small enhancements we are planning. :-)

:-)
David melgar 20 Sep 10 17:23

I’m trying to pick an online gtd site. This one seems pretty good. Can’t drag drop with iPad. Should have another way to do it. Fancy ui doesn’t help if it doesn’t work on popular devices.
I’m looking for a webapp because I use iPad, android and Mac. Hard to find a way to get to my information from any of them.

:-)
David melgar 20 Sep 10 17:24

More comments. I’m trying ti find a site which follows gtd very closely. I see many which make the claim and have nothing recognizable.

:-)
jeremy joslin 21 Sep 10 01:49

I’m interested in closer Google integration. For example, match all emails with label same as project. And match all google docs with project a la Evernote. I love and use EN but gDocs still has its place.

:-)
Todd 21 Sep 10 02:40

I for one appreciate all of these. Nozbe is coming along very well.

:-)
Michael 21 Sep 10 10:40

@Michael – yes, you’ll really love the new core GTD functionality we’re prepping

@Denis – we’ll take a look at MindManager’s API

@Marlon – we’re tweaking the UI and new enhancements are coming very soon

@David – we’re working on even better UI for iPad and iPhone with drag and drop too

@Jeremy – yes, we think the same :-)

@Todd – thanks for your kind words of appreciation – they keep us pumped up and motivated :-)

:-)
Ovi Savescu 21 Sep 10 12:10

Great job you’re doing here. Can’t wait for the deeper Google integration :-)
Keep up the good work!

:-)
Jeremy Mattingly 21 Sep 10 16:45

Michael, I appreciate this post and I’m looking forward to the new features; particularly better Someday/Maybe support and Checklists.

Thank you for taking this step and showing what’s coming up.

I was excited to see the title of this post in my News Reader and am very happy to see it as a direct response from our discussion in the forums.

I am excited to see the user base have a positive affect on the direction of the product. I’m glad I can have a part in that.

As you could probably guess, my biggest request would be to continue to share news like this on a regular basis. And perhaps over time make something more formal out of the roadmap as we discussed in the forum.

By the way, I love the idea of the weekly release of minor features.

Thanks for a great product, and thanks for the opportunity to help make it better!

:-)
H2orocks4000 21 Sep 10 17:22

Good job michael – look forward to offline features and google integration.

Google docs, gmail integration would be quite amazing. Even google voice.

P R 21 Sep 10 23:26

I’d still like to see much simpler email to Nozbe. ie no rules (no asterisks, no spaces, no set subject line) of any kind unless I want to use them. The tarpipe workaround is good for single tasks but I’d also like to see a means to have my email Subject = Project name and then the body, every line is a task for fast brainstorming. Not to mention someone asked about Mindjet, well all they’d have to do is output Mindjet (or any of countless other, similar apps like iThoughtsHD on the iPad) to an email and all those brainstorm points would become tasks. Easy and awesome in one step.

:-)
Vance Walker 22 Sep 10 12:32

Like PR, I was surprised simpler email utilization was not in the list. On the other hand, I understand PR’s requested method of handling but I would like a different mode. I guess there are so many opinions that sometimes it may be harder, as a developer, to choose a direction than to build the code to go there.

BTW, “my” way to use email was to use the subject as the task and the body as the notes of the task. That way I could BCC an email to Nozbe, assigning or accepting a task, when I reply to someone. I guess nothing fits all the people/situations all the time.

Sorting – on several fronts – would be a valuable improvement to make the list. On a related note, the ability to “grab” multiple tasks should too. Dragging one task at a time is…well, a drag.

On a different front (way down on the list of priorities), I think the UI could really stand to “mature.” IMHO, the UI looks very casual, perhaps “uncrisp” (to invent a word).

Bottom line, thanks for an excellent app that continues to improve! Count me as a VERY pleased paid subscriber.

:-)
Roy 22 Sep 10 14:53

Michael, First, thanks for a great product.

my suggestions are:
a. I will also appreciate one of those great Online Mind-mapping web applications integration (Like Mind-Meister or other).

b. Native and Full Google Docs integration – must.

c. Improve and simplify the way “Email to Nozbe” works. – also hope you can support Hebrew on this issue.

d. Other types of “lists” (not tasks), like shopping lists, and other kind of “permanent lists”.

:-)
Peter Kennedy 22 Sep 10 19:36

some things i always look for in GTD/Project Management apps:

timeline feature – so i can see the project linearly instead of using lists (just the way some of our minds work)

native Mac support – this may prove unnecessary with offline support but Evernote’s Mac app is evidence of valuable it is to have a native app to supplement the website/mobile apps.

thanks!

I think all of these comments are great, and I applaud Michael and his team for communicating these updates to users!

In addition to what’s been proposed, I would like to suggest better Calendar functionality. Both the web version of Nozbe and the iPhone app could use some calendar enhancements. In the web version, the numbered-week system is not the easiest to use – why not have an actual calendar? The iPhone app also could use an actual calendar interface (like the Calendar app that comes native with iPhone). Just my two cents!

Great product!!

:-)
Craig Findlay 23 Sep 10 18:27

Hi Michael, I have returned to Nozbe after some time on Omnifocus. The main reason is the web app. I need that while on a pc at the office. Nozbe is by far e best solution in getting to your list from different devices, love it thanks.

Core GTD is key for me, better sort options and the ability to nest projects within projects are key for me, also, I have to say that the Omnifocus’ weekly review feature is awesome. Would love to see something like that on the Nozbe iPad app.

Thanks for a great product and for sharing this information. Love it.

Thanks for this announcment… very well timed for me actually – I’m still trying to decide between many different solutions (literally have 6 tirals going right now including nozbe, milk, toodleo, and others)... It’s quite mind-boggling, but this announcment makes me much more comfortable about settling on Nozbe.

That said, I have to put my two cents in on how your list could be improved… anndddd…. actually, I think your list is 100% awesome. Thanks and good luck!

:-)
Michel Bakkenes 23 Sep 10 22:09

Thanks Michael for providing the roadmap, this looks very promising. My only concern would be: please keep the interface as simple as it is today :-) Seriously, this is the first app ever which i had up and running in just a couple of minutes – straight forward, intuitive, no (mandatory) tweaking or configuration, just really getting the thing done.

(Oh.. and dropbox file attachment / linking would be cool as well) ;-)

Cheers, Michel

Ben Kopf 24 Sep 10 04:55

I concur with everyone that likes the open news forum and your direction to a better feature set Michael – great stuff. That said, my Nozbe pain points are:
1 – I have a love/hate relationship with the rough cut nature of the user interface which I think could be better organized (bordered sections, more customization) and have cleaner drag and drop, but you seem to be touching on a lot of good improvements otherwise.
2 – I really need better “stuff” collection methods. I don’t want to pay Jott to get recorded to do’s into Nozbe for example. I’m constantly getting ideas and gotta do’s during my commute just like everyone else, and recording is essential to my GTD collection phase. If you guys can integrate with a speech to text mechanism (Dragon Dictation comes to mind, but I have no idea what that would cost), for the iPhone and iPad, I would be thrilled. I envision a dedicated recording button (please don’t 3,2,1 -go like Evernote, just start recording!) that translates the speech to text and puts it in my designated inbox, I for one would be thrilled. If that is too much, just having some wav, mp3, aif, attachment support so I could get my Evernote recordings into my inbox would be a great start.
So those are my two major wishes…thanks, ben

I’m trying to understand the official position on a Nozbe Android application.

There is a long running Forum thread on this here:
http://www.nozbe.com/gtd/forum/section-1/post-1ecf2c5/android_app

I originaly posted the following on the above thread but it may be that Nozbe thinks its best to discuss this in this.

By way of background…

1) This thread was started in March 2009:
http://www.nozbe.com/gtd/forum/section-1/post-1ecf2c5/android_app

2) In January 2010 Delfina says an Android app is “being worked on”

3) On 10th May Michael wrote (on another Android thread: http://www.nozbe.com/gtd/forum/section-1/post-e8df731/android_app ) that the Android App would come in July/August “We’re not far away there :-)”. This implies to me work being done in house on an app or contracts place with somebody outside.

4) On 26h May Delfina Tells this thread to watch the Blog – basically the same info as Michael wrote earlier in the month on the other thread.

5) July – Delfina tells us to watch the blog again

6) 19 August Delfina tells us the beta has moved back a “month or so”. So again more stated evidence of an app in production.

7) 4 September Frank Contrepois posts up that he has done a “thin Nozbe client”

8) 9 September Delfina tells us that Nozbe has established contact with Frank, given him better access tools and Michael will be posting “on his development pretty soon on blog.”

9) 21 September Michael does a blog entry titled “A kind-of Roadmap: where is Nozbe going?”. He wants to give us “a sneak peak at what’s coming to Nozbe this Fall”. Item 2 is: “Universal mobile app that works with Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone and more… (yes, we know you need it and we’ll give it to you finally!)” Its not clear if this is really an “app” (or a series of apps, one for each device) or just web access targeted at small screens.

And thats where the trail currently ends.

My questions…....................

1) Is Nozbe going to release its own Android app? Thats an app in the classic sense of something you get in a marketplace and is coded up for the job. If so when will this happen? It’s constant movement back implies to me its not actually really being developed with any determination.

or

2) Is Nozbe now backing Frank Contrepois’s app and they hope to see that as the main Android solution for customers?

Or

3) Is the Nozbe solution a new ‘Universal’ mobile website (not really an ‘app’ as we have come to understand the term at all)

Thanks – and sorry for putting people on the spot but its been a long summer for those of us with Android phones!

:-)
Joe Williams 29 Sep 10 13:25

Do we have this/last weeek’s enhancement announcement coming soon? The ‘minor tweaks’ ?

:-)
james bridgman 29 Sep 10 17:42

I agree with Vance’s comment about the UI needing to ‘mature’ – I think a better UI would add immensely to it’s productive use and appeal.

Would be happy to help in this area if you are interested…

:-)
james bridgman 29 Sep 10 17:43

...also would love ability to ‘stack’ actions in a sequence of steps, so that as the first ‘next action’ was marked completed, the following step replaced it.

:-)
Nick Coward 1 Oct 10 09:52

I would like to see a link with Dropbox as it is crazy loading files twice – specially when your bband is slow!

:-)
Nikos theodosakis 3 Oct 10 16:03

Hi Michael, – love Nozbe, thanks for your updates…I am still looking for a CRM integration or CRM plan. Any movement towards this or is there a solution that I don’t know about.
Thanks!

:-)
Jonny Mac 4 Oct 10 03:27

My team as been through a bunch of project management tools and having Evernote integration was a big push for us. Our crew loves tweaking color schemes and layouts. I must say your ipad app should help you drive the look of this site, it feels even more like the advanced nature of your awesome web app.

I can tell this thing is going to be getting even better, which means I can evangelize it big time in our office.

Is it possible to have more than one admin on our account?
Also I love the mouse over preview of jpegs, can other file types have this function, like vectors and psd’s

Keep up the good work!

:-)
scottmoehring 5 Oct 10 15:31

Love Nozbe. Can’t wait to see what’s next, and I agree with your list, especially the “strict GTD” enhancements like Someday/Maybe, Checklists, and better handling of completed actions. I like GTD just as it is, and I don’t need an app that allows me to try to “improve” it (for example, task managers that allow priority setting – a complete waste of time).

Anyway, the only productivity problem I’m having with Nozbe is on the iTouch. I have all these completed tasks. When do they disappear from my view? They are really starting to clutter things up. I sync with my Nozbe account, and they disappear from my browser view. I wish I could get them to disappear from the iTouch views as well.

It would also be nice to be able to view all completed actions for reference later.

Well done! Great product.

Scott
USA

:-)
scottmoehring 5 Oct 10 16:02

OK, sorry about that. The completed actions disappeared today after I synced, and in every view except for “items with no context”. And there is a place to view completed actions. I see it now. Apparently I need to dig a little more before I post…

:-)
H2orocks4000 5 Oct 10 18:32

i hope the universal mobile app and the HTML5 offline version allows nozbe to move forward faster. It seems like those are two big corner stones that once taken care of michael can focus on other things.

also, im looking forward to gmail integration and though it dosent explicitly say this – gmail is the most popular product next to search that google has. so it just makes sense that gmail integation will be improved.

as far as gmail integration – i want to put active inbox as a model for nozbe to possibly follow – also i want nozbe to include some sort of field in the compose message box in gmail that has nozbe remind us somehow when some one dosent respond to us within x number of days.

would be nice to even show us a list of emails that havent yet been responded too overall.

also, if done right – all that email instructions we need to remember should be done for – as they wouldnt be needed…categorize – create tasks- from within gmail via drag and drop and adding lables to messages would do all this for us.

ontop of that – google maps integration would be quite obvious to provide location tags and information to nozbe and tasks.

Google docs – would be a great replacment for those who dont use evernote as much and just want quick ways to access documents and etc through nozbe. Google even has a way to view a document within other apps – this way we could feasibly view our google docs within nozbe in the notes section and what not.

Google voice- an integration with this could create a powerful method of tracking calls – knowing when people have or have not responded to us ( combind this with above mentioned email feature i talked about)

it can also be great for one click calls within nozbe – one click of the mouse and we make a call

on top of that – imagine having 15 different people you have to call in a list. for the most part you have to call them about the same thing and those who you have to call about something else have a divider between them on the list.

then add a Play/Pause button to this list

suddenly you have a method to crank through phone calls we need to make by hitting play.

this helps GTD because after finishing a call – it makes the default sequence of events = automatically calling the next number. this way you dont touch anything and just sit back and talk. – amazing right!

with the dividers nozbe could provide a 15 second break that automatically plays again after 15 seconds (make this feature opptional, some will like cranking through one after the other and doing this can help enterprises.)

on top of that – GOOGLE TV is coming out soon or is out already – but i know i saw announcments about it already on fb..so its almost here.

this means we will be able to access nozbe via the TV – nice right. and control it via our smart phones.

This will just be nice as nozbe can create ways to suggest tasks for us to do that are quick – with pictures to jog our memories and get us moving and make us more productive.

:-)
Ronald van Gigch 10 Oct 10 20:52

First of all, let me say I rely like working with Nozbee. I used several other GTD-tools, but Nozbee, really does the trick for me.

I am looking for a way collaborate with others. Your teamwork feature has some potential, however I find myself in different Communities (Famlie, Business department, special project group). For this reasone I would really love a future to connect to other Nozbee users and build communities for different purposes where we can share projects and actions or delagete actions to each other. This looks more like a social media network where you can create groups the way you like. Adding a feature likes this would really boost Nozbe potential as a GTD colleborative tool.

I am using the Ipad app for a will now. It works great, however some changes are essential for me:

  • option to mark projects as completed
  • larger box when editing Notes for actions or projects

For Nozbe in general I would rely love possibilities for entering the levels (10.000 foot, 20.000, etc). This would make Nozbe compleet.

:-)
Błażej 11 Oct 10 11:33

I’d like to see option for downloading complete backup of my account.

:-)
Ronald van Gigch 20 Oct 10 22:33

One additional request for the Ipad app. A Home button!

:-)
Joost Vuijk 21 Oct 10 12:41

I’d like to see a Nozbe and Mindmeister integration. Mindmeister is a great tool to structure a project down to seperate actions. It would be great if these actions can be exported to Nozbe.

:-)
Mickey Mellen 23 Oct 10 15:22

Michael, I’d love to see your response to Bruce’s excellent post from Sept 24. In particular:

1) Is Nozbe going to release its own Android app?

— OR —

2) Is Nozbe now backing Frank Contrepois’s app and they hope to see that as the main Android solution for customers?

— OR —

3) Is the Nozbe solution a new ‘Universal’ mobile website (not really an ‘app’ as we have come to understand the term at all)?

:-)
Dan Martins 3 Nov 10 13:59

I generally love Nozbe (online, iPhone, iPad). My only wish for more—and this is a big one—is more robust functionality for repeating actions: More options for fine turning the interval, and an “auto-generate upon completion” option. I’m finding that stuff slips through the cracks of my planning because I forget to regenerate the next occurrence of a repeating action that doesn’t fit the available categories.

:-)
Louise Cloutier 3 Nov 10 14:27

IMHO, sorting (particularly by date) is not a small improvement. I spend an ridiculous amount of time manually sorting my tasks on the screen. There have been LOTS of discussion on the forum about this, in multiple threads, ever since I started with Nozbe. We keep getting promises that this is on the top of the list for new features, then nothing happens, while lots of other upgrades are developed. This may not be as glamorous as smartphone applications, but it is very important to lots of people. Please, can you tell us, when will this bug be fixed?

:-)
Nanci 3 Nov 10 14:43

Thank you for asking us for our comments so you can integrate our thoughts as well.

The one thing for me is the user interface – being able to customize it. I especially don’t like the size of font and that I can’t make any changes to it.

That is it.

:-)
Jacques Laufer 4 Nov 10 01:32

Add a Next Actions box at the top of page while doing a Project Review so that new idea items can be added while doing weekly review.

marcus 7 Nov 10 03:49

mindmeister & nozbe integration.

:-)
marcus 7 Nov 10 03:55

every-one in my company use Mindmeister. I realy think Nozbe and Mindmeister make the ultimate GTD solution.

:-)
Ronald van Gigch 19 Nov 10 21:14

Nozbe is great for individual use. Real breakthrough is possible with more business and collaboration support. I just got my first Team accountant (5 users) to start with.

Full team support could push Nozbe in place at companies worldwide. Perhaps you could look at possiblities to match / integrate / combine Nozbe with Yammer. We just started using Yammer in our Dutch based company and it is taking of like a rocket. Yammer is twitter in business and supports interaction between collega’s company wide or for special intrest or project groups.

A combination of Nozbe and Yammer could realy make sense. Stop building your one team message board en activity list and start integration to use Yammer to make this conversation for you. This team up places Nozbe in scope for companies worldwide using Yammer.

Ben Zapp 10 Dec 10 21:30

Please. for the love of god. An android app.

:-)
kellie 4 Jan 11 20:54

echo that – an android app please! :-)

:-)
Neil Spiegel 14 Jan 11 04:34

My main area of interest is in the Team area. I find the app works quite well for me. Less so for getting my team involved. Two things I think are simple are just notifications.
1) Notify by email each team member if something has been assigned to them. This is especially important to get people using Nozbe if one person in the office is the champion. If they dont have it integrated in their life yet and their is no email notification it loses the ‘trusted source’ that is so important for GTD.
Same email back to Assignor when Assignee completes task.

I love the bookmarklet. Made the email to task process sweet.

Lastly I find it annoying that I have to invite people to every project and wait for them to agree before I can assign them stuff. I would like to assign prior to them accepting. If they dont accept my problem, but it interrupts the flow if outlining a project and assigning tasks to have to wait for them.

Thx for your great work on the product.

:-)
Jason Cronister 7 Jun 11 15:59

Michael – is there any plans for a standalone application? I’ve just signed up for Nozbe and would love to be able to have a resident application on my laptop to use offline.

:-)
serge.j.imbert@gmail.com 15 Oct 11 04:26

Michael – Thanks for all the improvements!
On top of my list : a way to review all my action on a weekly basis , more efficiently. I use to do this with Mindmanager , when I was laptop oriented . In fact any idea for reviewing is good to take. I realize that I am adding sometimes, same action several time at different location.
Thanks !

:-)
Michaeldbl 11 Mar 12 00:24

As an Android user the creation of a decent and bugless Android app is absolutely crucial. It really should be an app with offline capabilities (meetingrooms with no network availability…)
