Nozbe Desktop for Mac and Windows - beta 2

Michael   Friday, July 15

Update, Aug 6, 2011: Get Nozbe beta3 for Mac and Windows

Developing a great native desktop application isn’t easy but we’re committed to making it happen and we want to achieve the best native experience ever for our users (and for ourselves!)

Our team (Paul, Radek and Tomasz) has been working like crazy these past days to deliver you the second beta of our native application – now for both Mac and Windows:

Download Nozbe beta 2 for the Mac

-

Download Nozbe beta 2 for Windows

Known issues:

  • This is a beta software – while we are using it for our day-to-day work, bugs may show up and things may not behave as they should. We’re counting on your feedback here.
  • Sync is manual. Auto sync will be introduced in the future versions of the app
  • Labels for projects are not fully supported yet (can’t add new labels, etc.)
  • Project options like deleting, completing, printing, etc. will be introduced later, too.
  • Evernote is supported if you have it in your Nozbe account. Full Evernote support soon.
  • Files and Dropbox support soon.

Other than that, there are still some power-features missing but we’ll be rolling out new betas sooner rather than later and we’re counting on your feedback.

This app works really well and is very fast – you’ll love it, hopefully :-)

Michael, Thanks for the Windows Beta. Just downloaded and it seems to be really fast, moving from section to section. Can’t wait to see what features are added next.

:-)
Juan Ros 16 Jul 11 00:49

Mac version looks great and is very fast! Nice work!! I am not able to edit existing comments within actions…is that forthcoming?

:-)
Michael Koehler 16 Jul 11 02:13

Congratulations! I know how much work this was. I’m still writing my own Windows client (see my comments at http://wp.me/p1sDoL-33), but I see that as just more options (at least for those of us on Windows). I can’t wait to see this new strategy unfold!

:-)
しごたの 16 Jul 11 04:41

Thanks Michael! I’ll try it.

:-)
Arjan Broere 16 Jul 11 08:17

I am having trouble logging in. As soon as I hit enter I get “blad:null”. While the error message appears the loginscreen says “Logging in”

Any ideas?

:-)
Michael 16 Jul 11 08:25

@Juan – in this beta comments should work without glitch. We use it to collaborate and post comments to each others’ tasks

@Michael – yes, more options the better, keep up the great work!

@Arjan – try restarting the app and logging in with your email and password, should work. If not, contact support, please.

:-)
Juan Ros 16 Jul 11 08:37

Sorry, @Michael – I am able to see comments within actions but not edit them. Also – I’m sure you’re working on this – but there’s no way to mark Projects as complete. But it’s a great interface!! Kudos to all!

:-)
Michael 16 Jul 11 08:42

You can add comments, delegate tasks, etc. You cannot edit comments (yet) and cannot mark projects as complete and delete them (it’s all coming soon in beta3) – we just had to stop at one point and show you what we’ve got – it’s already a very usable app and we use it now mainly as our way of working in Nozbe. Now let’s track down some bugs, add missing functionality and we’ll hopefully have a great native project and task management app :-)

:-)
Arjan Broere 16 Jul 11 08:46

@Michael, sorry. Still same errors: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/231/loginerror.png/ and this one http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/339/loginqn.png/

:-)
Michael 16 Jul 11 09:34

Thanks Arjan, we’ll check it out and see what’s there – hope to fix it ASAP. Sorry for that and thanks for reporting!

:-)
Peter Edwards 16 Jul 11 10:28

I like it though miss some of the Green. The obvious omission is the context bar. Will you be continuing with this feature?

:-)
Arjan Broere 16 Jul 11 10:49

@Michael, did some research here and the issue is NOT Nozbe but some security thingy on my laptop. Sorry for the false alarm.

:-)
Michael Masin 16 Jul 11 12:23

Should the manual sync work? I completed a project on web and manually synced Win client but project was still in list. I had to logout / login to update the projects list.

:-)
Blauer Indianer 16 Jul 11 12:39

Requests for Nozbe/Windows:

  • You’ll need a new desktop icon, the resolution is too low, causes pixelation ;)
  • As someone also suggested for the Mac/beta 1: A three column layout would emphasize the USP of Nozbe much more and would of course be more comfortable to use (screens nowadays are certainly big enough for a three-column layout)
  • Not yet possible to drag and drop tasks onto projects/contexts (probably intended)
  • Takes too long to delete a task (2 clicks)
  • The context icon ‘computer’ is not very easy to recognize because the actual computer screen is too small
  • Most of the buttons are designed in light grey, which lets me assume, they were currently inactive, but actually they’re clickable and the functions are usable
  • When you add a new item, the wheel (that you can click on to set up more detailed information) should (in my opinion) not be left to the “Add” button, but below the star (usability)
  • And as I already emailed you a while ago: It would be great if you could split a tasks in a bunch of tiny tasks, if the one you originally chose was too big (but that was meant as an improvement for Nozbe altogether)
  • Storing on the local PC: Does the software already store the data on the local PC like Evernote for example? Would be great, as you wouldn’t need to worry about server downtimes that much.
  • I’m not gonna repeat the features that are not yet included, as their missing is intended by the developers

What is great about Nozbe/Windows:

  • Grouping of tasks (yeah!)
  • For windows software, quite a neat look
  • Very fast, though actually not the smallest piece of software
  • Great idea at all to create a windows software for Nozbe — that was the next necessary step for a global empire :D

That’s my 5 cents after like half an hour of use. Hope it’ll help.

:-)
Blauer Indianer 16 Jul 11 12:44

Ohhh, forgot something:

  • Keyboard shortcuts!
:-)
Michael Masin 16 Jul 11 13:35

The target area for the task complete check is easy to miss when I’m not paying attention and I expand the task instead. A visual clue, like a border around the target area, would be helpful.

Is there (or will there be) the ability to change the context icons? The current ones don’t mean anything to me.

The white text in the pink/red overdue date is washed out. The project name text in a task is too small and too light. Will the fonts/colors be configurable?

Maybe move the logout button to a corner where it’s out of the way?

:-)
Robert Burke 16 Jul 11 18:24

Nice job Michael!

:-)
Tony Straughan 16 Jul 11 18:29

Slick App – looking forward to the release of other features. Thanks!

:-)
mrdoro 16 Jul 11 19:20

after first start looks pretty good ;)
naturally mac version looks better ;)
nice job
regards

:-)
Michael Hyatt 16 Jul 11 20:22

I love it! It really is fast. I haven’t noticed any bugs, just the missing features you noted.

:-)
Juan Ros 17 Jul 11 06:21

@Michael (Sliwinski) – thanks for the comments. Right on! One more suggestion which I presume is already in motion would be search. That’s such a great feature on Nozbe Web! As always, you and your growing team are on top of things and helping the rest of us get things done! Keep up the great work!!

:-)
Norbert Bach 17 Jul 11 13:01

SUPER! Thanks

:-)
Blauer Indianer 17 Jul 11 15:08

Bugs

  • Somehow Nozbe/Windows suddenly adds a date to tasks without intention
  • Removing a date that was set once doesn’t work in Nozbe/Windows, gotta use the web version
:-)
David Young 17 Jul 11 20:17

Just downloaded windows app. Can create project but not task? Click the add button on new task and nothing happens.

:-)
David Young 17 Jul 11 20:24

Well, I can see this is a work in progress. I stopped and started the app and can now add a task. This app is overdue and much welcomed. Oddly, even though we are all becoming “cloud” in focus, and Nozbe HAD to start on the cloud, without the desktop client, Nozbe was being left behind. I strongly encourage the Evernote model, and more tight integration with EN. That is the way to go. Keep the updates coming.

:-)
David Cornish 17 Jul 11 21:50

Looks good – great first beta.

On my list of labels I have a whole list of blank lines prior to my actual labels.

My context icons also don’t match very well to the icons in the web interface, which is very confusing (eg. a running man for ‘errands’ works well whereas an aeroplane is just confusing).

The number inside the comments box is quite hard to read – maybe that’s just my eyesight!

Looking forward to being able to filter my Next Actions list!

Other than that, everything’s been covered above – looking forward to further great work from your team.

:-)
David Cornish 17 Jul 11 21:51

... should have said, I’m on the Windows version here (hence my mention of first, rather than second beta, despite realising now that they both say beta 2)

:-)
Blauer Indianer 17 Jul 11 23:05

@David Cornish: I think (!), that the next version of Nozbe/Web will bring a new set of icons, that will match the ones of the apps.

Though I’d like to add, it would be great to have a wider variety of icons anyway in the future.

:-)
David Young 18 Jul 11 00:39

A question. Sync: I have downloaded the native app at home and work. The home app sync’s nicely with the web app in both directions. The work install wont sync at all. Neither direction. I’ve stopped and started the app. I’ve rebooted the computer. Nothing. I know this is beta, but wondering why the problem. Both boxes are Windows 7, home is 64 bit, work is 32. No other differences.

:-)
Atsushi Sakae 18 Jul 11 03:32

Thanks Michael. I noticed two strange points. first, In desktop version, we can’t group by project label about Next Actions area. In web app version can it already. two, why don’t Calendar are appear ? We want to set a task’s due date with drag and drop. It is very inconvenience… And please add fulfilling keyboard shortcuts. I have a high expectation of born great desktop Nozbe. Thanks!

:-)
Michael 18 Jul 11 06:07

Thanks everyone for great comments! (and detailed feedback) – please keep it all coming. We have VERY high hopes for this desktop app and we want to make it a really perfect and seamless experience for you all (and for ourselves).

Some features have been left behind still as we want to implement them the “right way” in the desktop app. Keyboard shortcuts are definitely coming, too. Just that we have learned a lot from the Web version and want to re-implement some of the features in a little different, more user-friendly way.

Stay tuned, and keep the comments coming – we’re reading each and every one of them to make sure we’ll make the app a lot better – beta3 to show up very soon – hope to reach the official status in August (and show up in Mac Appstore then, too)

:-)
karabina 18 Jul 11 09:31

linux version?

:-)
Paul Jansen 18 Jul 11 09:40

Great to have a native app

Confusing to have different context icons on the desktop to those on web and ipad.

Seems to be no indication when you filter projects by Labels. (Still need to be able to filter projects by multiple labels though :) )

List view for labels is too restrictive ( web and App)

:-)
Paul Jansen 18 Jul 11 09:44

Three column layout would be great like web site as most desktop screens are wide screen these days!

:-)
Randy May 18 Jul 11 15:20

I really like the new Nozbe for Mac!

Would like to see hot keys for creating new tasks.

:-)
Ilya Gotfryd 18 Jul 11 15:22

Michael,
I am using Nozbe excessively and have one of my coworkers hooked on it. The Desktop version is quick and functional. Not as sexy as the web version, but definitely gets the job done. Thank you for all your efforts and keeping this project fresh. Got to using this without a problem.
A quick comment, I really like the ability to drag tasks into calendar in web UI, is something like that coming on desktop?
Ilya Gotfryd

Chaplin 18 Jul 11 16:25

I can’t log in into win application. After long waiting I have alert ‘Blad: null’.
I am standing behind http proxy. Is it an issue? What about proxy support?

:-)
Texafornia 18 Jul 11 18:12

Looks great. Skins for web version coming soon?

:-)
Jacques Laufer 18 Jul 11 23:04

Being behind a proxy seems to be an issue. I also get the “Blad: null” error when trying to log on. Logging in from home with no proxy is not a problem.

:-)
Tatsuya Sasaki 19 Jul 11 03:15

Thanks Michael, Paul, Radek and Tomasz!

:-)
Juha Leivo 19 Jul 11 10:45

I’d love to have URI support, for general usability. I work around the missing Onenote integration by using onenote links, they are in URI format onenote:////, unfortunately the software doesn’t support URI:s so I need to copy & paste (copy, ctrl+r, paste, enter). Could you add URI support? General URI support is more useful than lets say onenote integration as one could use that URI’s to launch to SSH commands, with SSH:// straight from their notes.

:-)
Nicolas Doye 19 Jul 11 17:40

On Windows behind a corporate proxy. I just get “Problems during login :(” Can it be picked up from one’s IE settings (like Chrome does?)

:-)
David Young 20 Jul 11 01:16

I appreciate the effort, and Nozbe REALLY needs the native client, but this is a seriously beta offering. The sync issues are so substantial that it is something that I’ll watch with interest, but is of no practical value right now. Keep working. We really need this.

:-)
Tomasz Bieńkowski 20 Jul 11 17:37

When we should expect Linux version?

:-)
David Cornish 20 Jul 11 20:01

Small, but slightly annoying bug in the Windows version – maximise the window and the bar at the bottom showing the current project/context doesn’t move relative to the top of the window, so the list of actions is cut off. A similar adjustment is not made when the window is restored again. Switching to another project fixes this, but it’s mildly frustrating. Windows 7×64.

Otherwise the last few days of use has been very positive!

:-)
Terri Harmon 20 Jul 11 21:14

Good start – I am going to like the windows ap! Noticed a problem this morning – I am a android ap user and entered a number of tasks to my inbox from my phone. They synced to my online account, but when I accessed the windows application and synced it to my online account, those actions I entered via the android ap did not sync to my windows application.

:-)
Dan Scoular 21 Jul 11 12:50

This is a huge step, thank you so much.

:-)
Terri Harmon 21 Jul 11 13:13

update to my note yesterday. After I added project, and or date to the items in my inbox that had not synced with the desktop ap, they synced.

:-)
raffaellorb 21 Jul 11 13:42

Jeśli chodzi o aplikacje na PC
-mam wrażenie że literki są za małe w opisie zadań
- ikonki kontekstów nie działają, a powinny być takie same jak na www jak i oczywiście w kolorze
-brak języka polskiego w aplikacji

:-)
Brage Strand 21 Jul 11 16:32

And where is the someday-maybe functions? and better tickler-system? I don’t understand why this isn’t a focus area? I don’t understand why this isn’t a focus area? Isn’t the GTD philosophy more important than having a native app everywhere?

I just don’t get why we need a native app on mac or windows? It’s just more work for you to update when you do changes, and focusing on web development enables you to deliver better product faster…

ps; the green gives we a more positive wibe. The grey is kinda intimidating with a long task-list. But that’s just my personal impression.

Furthermore; I think the nozbe-web have been slower lately. It takes for ever to create or change a task due to long time saving it…It also takes 3-5 sec to change a project label(or it to update on the web)

:-)
Victor Yates 21 Jul 11 21:42

Is the Mac client Lion OSX compatible?

:-)
Alex Breen 22 Jul 11 00:05

I’m a big fan of the desktop app (Windows). I especially like that I can work on it offline, while on the train (Bart) in the morning.

One feature that would be incredibly useful (to me) would be an integration with Outlook email that would create a new task linked to an email. A large number of my short term tasks and projects start with an email. Someone will email me and I’ll have 3 tasks to do to complete it. These pile up during the day/week and it is the perfect place to file it in my inbox, clear my head, and rest assured that I will get to it later. Rather than open a separate app and type in a summary of the email, I’d much prefer to just click a button on the email (or maybe the flag for follow-up button) and have Nozbe automatically add to my Inbox a new task with the title of the email subject and a link back to the original email message.

:-)
Michael 22 Jul 11 10:49

Thanks guys for the kudos and suggestions! We’ll try to fix most of the issues as soon as possible and move on to brining you new the missing features + many new ones on the desktop app.

As to the integration with other native apps (local URIs, Outlook, etc) – keep on sending us your ideas and we’ll try to make this happen.

The Mac client works on Lion as far as I know, we don’t support full-screen mode yet, but it’s definitely coming.

Linux version – we’re thinking about it but if it shows up, then after the Mac and PC apps have gone “official”.

Proxy support is important – we’ll try to fix this as well. Thanks for letting us know about it.

Keep your ideas coming, we’re working hard on making this app really cool :-)

:-)
ARW 22 Jul 11 18:28

I think this is the best opportunity to finally make Nozbe fully keyboard navigable, without using the mouse! Especially to be able to reorder the tasks in a list, insert above & below a task/note, etc. I really hope you take advantage of this opportunity as I’m pretty sure there is a large user base that does not like the wasted time and awkwardness of switching back and forth from keyboard to mouse. Thanks!

:-)
Theresa Shin 24 Jul 11 08:17

This is great, I love the native app.
I use both Nozbe and Things, and I think that this will help me wean off of Things.
However one suggestion – one thing I love about Things is that I can use my Apple hotkeys (Cmd N for new task, etc). It would be great to see that here too. Also project settings don’t show up (for sharing, etc). Just a few suggestions in case they didn’t come up before. Awesome!

:-)
Paul Jenkins 24 Jul 11 13:30

Congrats on a really promising product. Just had an odd thing happen, however. I downloaded a copy of Titanium Studio to give it a run and see what it could do. When I uninstalled it (Titanium) I lost all of the chrome around the Nozbe app (Beta 2 on Win7×64). I’ve since reinstalled Titanium Studio, but the chrome hasn’t been restored. Also, when I use the close button from the lower bar of the application, I get a blank (empty) login screen again. I’ve tried a couple of reinstalls, including clearing out the data from (profile)AppDataRoamingTitaniumappdata without any effect. Any ideas how I can restore the application? I’m happy to wait for the next update if not…

:-)
Paul Jenkins 24 Jul 11 14:32

Re the last comment about window chrome: it actually isn’t anything to do with uninstalling Titanium: it looks like the problem actually appears when you change themes under Win7×64 (not sure about x86). With Windows Classic theme the window chrome isn’t visible, but it /is/ actually visible running with one of standard desktop themes (the default Windows 7 theme for instance). Sorry; a small bug, but not what I originally mentioned :-(

:-)
Matthew West 26 Jul 11 17:46

This may have already been mentioned, but when you create a new project in the native app, the functionality let’s you select a label, however, once you save the project, the label is not there and the project appears as not labeled.

:-)
Matthew 27 Jul 11 02:33

Michael – love the native app!! Thank you! Now I just need Nozbe for my BlackBerry Playbook ;) Keep up the great work!

:-)
Ray Anderson 27 Jul 11 17:00

I have tried the app and look forward to its completion. I had trouble with the sync and stopped using it for now. I also hope the first release will allow you to type when searching for labels and to filter next action steps by label, etc.

This will be very useful. Thank you for developing this application.

Doug Friedlander 28 Jul 11 08:20

I cannot emphasize and “amen” enough the requests for full keyboard functionality. It’s make or break for me with Nozbe. The previous web version’s inconsistent implementation of this made it untenable. I really liked what I was getting from the iPhone app and when I heard about the native client, I was thrilled. But if it doesn’t allow you to do absolutely everything without a mouse — and efficiently — it won’t keep up with the speed of my brain and if it can’t do that, I’m better off with a sophisticated Excel spreadsheet (and I really don’t want to be saying that!). Please, please, please give us full keyboard control! Let us tab through selections, use drop-downs to choose items… all tried and true conventions! Thanks in advance…

:-)
arvind s grover 28 Jul 11 17:13

I am using the Mac client (which looks beautiful). When I check off items via Android client or web, then sync Nozbe desktop, the items are still there. They won’t move to completed state.

:-)
Luis Robles 28 Jul 11 20:58

Freakin well done

:-)
Paul Kroto 5 Aug 11 03:19

I am sure you guys already are aware of this but the calendar view on the windows software has a few bugs – it is not putting actions in the right order like the online version does and it does not move reoccurring items forward like it should. I would love to see both the online and off line version of the calendar move completed items for the day down to the bottom. Also been looking for the feature to select which day of the week an item reoccurs on for a while now – hope you guys can work that in!! Otherwise nozbe ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

:-)
David Young 7 Aug 11 21:16

Just looked at beta 3 of the desktop app. Sync seems GREATLY improved. Usable now! Great progress.

:-)
Scott 22 Aug 11 15:31

Love the windows software but I can’t use it because when I complete a task(s) then go to sync with the online account, it marks them all uncompleted again, have tried waiting for 30 mins in case it needs to update, would be ok using it standalone maybe but I also use my nozbe on my ipad and android phone (their ipad app is brilliant by the way) – once the windows software has the bugs worked out I’ll certainly be using it, just disappointed I can right now
