Learning from mistakes

I’d like to apologize everyone for today’s Nozbe login problems. For a couple of hours many folks couldn’t log in to their Nozbe account and some couldn’t use Nozbe at all.

Apparently there was a problem with our SSL (secure server) configuration, which under certain circumstances just stopped displaying the page

Although we spotted the problem very quickly, our engineers had hard time finding the right configuration to make sure something like this wouldn’t happen again.

We’ve found a fix and everything is working properly now… and the server is configured perfectly. Of course your user data has been been safe as always.

I’m really sorry we didn’t communicate this with you. I’ve received many emails asking what is wrong and expressing concerns about Nozbe being down.

We are really crazy about Nozbe uptime and we’re making sure Nozbe runs smoothly every day

...and we’ve been so proud Nozbe has been running without any hiccup for so much time, we even didn’t prepare any channel for communication with our users in case of emergency to let you know that:

  1. we are aware of the problem
  2. we are working hard on the fix
  3. you have nothing to worry about – your data is safe

Although we host Nozbe on state-of-the-art enterprise-level fully-redundant servers in the USA at one of the best US ISPs, we have triple-backup system to make sure your data is safe, yet sometimes a small configuration problem can cause our servers to stop displaying Nozbe web site… and we don’t have any communication channel for that.

We’re in the process of preparing a system to let you know that when something like this happens again (hopefully never!), you’ll be informed what is happening and approximately when the problem will be fixed.

Thanks for your trust and for being Nozbe users – we are proud to be able to serve you and to have such great community of users on our side

Please accept my deepest apologies for today’s problems and rest assured that we’ve learned our lesson and will do better at communicating problems with you… although we hope we won’t have to do that again :-)

Please rest assured that we’re constantly monitoring our servers and fixing the problems as they arise… but we just never learned to communicate them properly. It’s time to improve that!

I remember Twitter, Digg, Flickr and other big guys had great ways of communicating their problems so it’s time to learn from the best.

If you like this post, I'd appreciate a Digg  /  Del.icio.us  /  Stumble

Thank you – I was wondering what happened. During the outage which lasted several hours, I was not able to access my tasks – mild concern. Perhaps a data export capability would be useful?

You rock!

Thanks guys for your support! We’re improving our services on a consant basis, we’ve added additional prevention systems to make sure these small glitches don’t happen anymore and we’ll continue to strive for perfection. Having such great users behind our back keeps us motivated at 110%! Thanks again!

I second the previous posters. I have used Nozbe just about everyday for the last six months and have never seen it down. I guess I was playing when the outage occurred :-) Because I am using Nozbe and iNozbe to manage all my projects in my position with a government agency, comfort would be added by the availability of a simple comma delimited bulk export of all my data. That way, if anything catastrophic occurs, I would be able to reconstruct. The only way I’ve found so far to back up data locally is to print project screens to pdf, but that process is time consuming. But again, thanks for a great application, Nozbe has moved to #1 on my list, even above all other applications and web services I’ve used for the past 23 years of computing. Keep up the great work!

:-)

Hey Michael, uptime is not a problem – but everytime I tried to invite someone by email, the mail failed to reach the recipient. I reported email problem twice but it seems to continue. Otherwise great work, bests
