We haven’t been posting much these last two months as we’ve been crazy-engineering our desktop applications as well as our Android app. The iOS apps by Macoscope have been updated, too.
3 column design – new Nozbe for your Windows and Mac
As we’re approaching the final version of our desktop application, we decided to give you an early scoop of the new design. We’re aiming at late November official release of this application, but I just couldn’t stand the fact that you – our fantastic users – who make our software so great – won’t get an early scoop, so here it is:

Here’s the all-new interface:
Here’s how it looks on Windows:
The devil lies in the details, design similar to Twitter, Sparrow…
With this new version of Nozbe we’d like to introduce you to a completely new menu/column interface. Let’s start with left column which has been styled in a similar way as Twitter for Mac, Sparrow (a cool, minimalist Mail client) and other similar modern apps:
Task details are now to the right
In our team we use collaborative features of Nozbe all of the time (shared projects, task comments) so we decided that a dedicated column to task details is a better way to go than putting comments and task details in two different views below the task itself, what do you think?
Excited so far? We’re now tweaking the interface even more and adding more features, so we count on your feedback here!
Do let us know what you think!

Why beta5? What happened to beta4?
In case you’re wondering, we skipped one version – beta4 was our internal build that we were supposed to ship mid-September but decided to work a little more and bring you a more polished beta5 right away. Enjoy it!

More transparency for you – Nozbe Test blog
We “heart” our community of our fantastic Nozbe users and we’ve been listening – we just launched Nozbe Test Blog where we’ll be posting unstable releases of Nozbe Desktop and feature ideas – where we’ll be counting on your feedback and on your support. Make sure to visit our new test blog and subscribe – it’s all for you. New beta5 build with additional features to test for you coming next week!
Thanks so much for your support!
We are now a team of 9 people, with 4 engineers on board and hiring a new one next month and we’re working like crazy on bringing you the best Nozbe experience – we’ll try to keep you a lot more up to date with our Nozbe test blog and more frequent updates here. Stay tuned!
Comments:
I downloaded
I downloaded the new Beta but I don’t have columns.
Just downloaded on my Mac… it looks very good after a few short minutes.
Erik, you can save an extra 10% on my blog – http://gtdwizard.com/2011/09/10-nozbe-discount-for-gtdwizard-readers/
Susanna – I thought that also at first, you need to click on a task to see the 3rd column.
No columns for me, either
Great job as usual, Nozbe team! Are there plans to bring these enhancements to the web interface also?
Columns a nice innovation but still no apparent keyboard shortcuts or keyboard usability at all. The absence of these makes it extremely difficult to quickly add tasks, use the product as an “extension of myself” and to really evaluate the interface as a whole. Will there be full keyboard support in the final version?
Excellent, This 3rd column design is perfect. This task preview column is as it should be :)
Where can we send feedback on this release?
It’s looking good on Windows, is much more usable, and great to see a number of the bugs fixed (although there are still a few visual artifacts switching between the maximised and restored windows).
Definitely looking forward to auto-sync!
Also, it does not appear to be possible to filter the next actions yet? I rely in the web version on filtering by label, which is possible in the projects view, but not ‘next actions’ as far as I can see.
Great progress since the last beta and look forward to future updates!
Michael
Installed on my Windows 7 i5 core machine andworks no problem.
Had a little trouble finding the add new item button but nowI have it makes good sense.
I have been able to create 8 projects on my 5 project account will I loose these projects if I populate them.
Cant see how yo delet projects , where is project info equivalent?
The Evernote window is a bit small, any way to make this bigger?
Generally looking good I willbe using it
Thanks
Whilst it’s great you’re doing further development on the Android version, I’m afraid I’m rather disappointed that you’re still not able to support small screen phones such as mine (HTC Wildfire – QVGA (240×320)). It’d be great if your developers could widen support to include these phones which are very popular in the UK : http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html.
All is great – just add more functions to make it work faster, we can’t use a gtd-app that takes 2 minutes to record an action. Also, HTC Desire with Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 seems to be getting a lot of errors both when opening contexts and projects.. Also syncing isn’t working too good.
I like the new look. How do you get to the project details of an existing project? No way to delete a project?
Thanks,
Would like Auto-sync – clicking around can sometimes be slow. Cost is decently high…not sure I’ll keep using it…just started trying this out at my new endeavor. Looking for keyboard shortcuts….
Also would like some way to prioritize projects that then sorts my next actions as well by the priority.
1. I agree. . . need a way to prioritize the tasks. My tasks keep getting out of order.
2) on new PC version, I don’t see an option to print.
3) Also, I like how you can just type one task after another.
4) Long-term I think it would be helpful for each of your interfaces to resemble. It seems a little cumbersome to have to have multiple formats of your views across Mac, PC, and iPad, and web. (The good news is that you can access across all platforms — which is why I love this App!)
5) Issue with InBox. Some of my items that are in my Inbox are assigned to projects. This is confusing me. And, I think it’s a bug in the new Desktop for Windows.
Is there a way to delete comments on the Desktop version as you can on the browser and iPhone versions? Thanks.
Crashed after login.
Works well on my MacBook pro, thanks to the developer team.
Thank you very much for great application.
I can’t change the order of tasks in calendar view. Drag&drop works in Next Actions View, but not in Calendar view. Changing the task order in a Calendar view helps me to schedule my day.
OS: Windows7 64bit
downloaded beta but program will not open, when i put mouse over nozbe program seems like it’s there but when i double click nothing happens, any thoughts?
thank you,
roland
Please, remove horrible-horrible-horrible adobe-ish white-on-black color scheme for the details column!!! At least, make it optional. It’s so eyes irritating, especially in contrast to the other columns.
Drag and drop experience is completely missed.
Especially for the Inbox. Web interface allows you to drag&drop – really quickly! – every entity either to the Context or to the Project. Desktop requires you to dig into every entity (which now are separated to three different panes: Tasks|Notes|Files – why? Give me the option to see all project items together, let me press all three buttons simultaneously. Besides, notes and Ever-notes are already glued together which looks inconsistently).
Evernote experience remains rudimentary
Preview pane is unacceptable small. Even as a reference. Even to recognize – what is this note about.
To duplicate Evernote desktop functionality within Nozbe desktop would be pretty inefficient, IMHO.
The simple and elegant solution would be to provide two level integration.
First level – to retrieve from Evernote servers note’s thumbnail and note’s short text description, in order to recognize, what is this note about. Even today’s Nozbe implementation, with tiny preview, is good enough. But please, make it bigger!
Second level – use evernote:/// links to launch full Evernote desktop client. Someone might argue, that full Evernote client needs to be installed. Let’s consider this a requirement for full Nozbe-Evernote integration and advantage over Web version.
I can’t add labels to projects.
When I look at all the items within a project, I do not notice when there is a note made for this project. I have to click deliberately on the button notes to find out there are notes available . There are no possibilities to go to the properties of a project (color, sharing etc). My Inbox is not visible. Overall I am happy with this start of the new looks. Some improvement still needed for the colors or make it possible to choose your own colors, to make it more your own.
Make it possible to arrange the items in Calendar chronologically or to let the order free and change the order at your own wish. I cannot make the connection with Evernote (project properties)
It would also be very helpful within the project when there is a choice to change the order of the items : – chronologically, – alphabetical , or free to order them by yourself
I also found out, that an item that is repeated (example yearly), appears in the items list without the year, so you do not know if you are looking at the item of this year (overdue) or the item of next year.
Looks good. I hope this is the web interface?
Just to give some overall feedback, I would really like the ability to add actions in a project which don’t show up until the preceding action is finished. I may have 10 things to do but if they need to be done in order then it is cluttered and difficult to look at it. Technically, the phrase ‘next action’ doesn’t mean to add one more thing to your list of things to do. It means to add the action that comes NEXT in that process.
Even if I could at least put in a date wherein things don’t show on my list UNTIL that day, that would be helpful. If I add something that I need to do in March, I may not want to look at it till the end of February!
If you could consider this feedback, I would appreciate it.
Drag and Drop to clear inbox and send tasks to projects and contexts is sorely missed. Web based handling of this feature is a major plus and really expedites getting inbox to zero. New look and speed of desktop is great though, good work Nozbe team!
Where is the best place to provide feedback? It seems my choices are here, the Nozbe forum, or email. How would you like us to do this?
+1 for drag and drop. Also hoping keyboard shortcuts will be switch on for the final version. Nice start though
I really like the new version (Mac), as mentioned by others I would like the tasks to be listed by date when in the project or context views. Eg I might have 20 items in a Project and it would be helpful for them to be listed in the date order. Thanks
downloaded , installed , double click and it doesnt open on a win 7 machine
It would be nice if the Projects existed in the left hand pane. From my inbox I typically drag my tasks to the appropriate project using the web app. That’s not possible here.
I’m Japanese user. very good tool.
but I can’t type Japanese word. because Japanese is change to the Kanji. and type the enter key.
but Enter is submit the task in this soft. If I was typing the Japanese word. submit to this software not completely.
The appearance is nice; however, I am unable to view Evernote notes and Dropbox files? Anyone else experiencing this?
日本語で使っています。このバージョンで、アイテムの新規作成/修正などのときに、文字を漢字に変換して確定のためにリターンを叩くと、アイテム自体が確定してしまいます。
Though when western people hits return key it means line feed or to determine the line, while we Japanese use return key not only as line feed, but also to select Kanji (Chinese Character).
When I hit return key to select Kanji, I don’t determine the item.
I would like to continue inputting that line.
Sometimes Non-Japanese oriented application hold this kind of trouble.
(Once 1Password had this trouble also. but now 1Password is fixed.)
Downloaded Windows version and used it for two days, on the third day when I tried opening the program it opened in the quick launch tray could never get it to actually come up on the screen. I have a new PC i7 running Win Pro 64-bit. I did like the layout.
No longer opens when launched. Please fix.
Proxy
Is there any way to use the application behind a company’s proxy?
As you cannot rely on having connectivity everywhere, having a stand-alone application is an excellent decision. Nevertheless, for corporate users, there must be an option to configure proxy authentication.
@Tom – for some reason the Nozbe window actually takes itself off screen. What you need to do is open the Nozbe program, and then select it – but you won’t see the window. Just click Windows Key + the right arrow/left arrow until the window shows up. I had the same problem! (note to Devs)
Devs, I’m using Win7 64bit, and when I try to manipulate a note, I don’t have the mentioned options of reorder, edit, remove when I hover my mouse on the note; I also don’t have a dark triangle next to the note’s title. I cannot manipulate the base note that comes in the new desktop version (“My first note in this project”) unless I do so on the normal online Nozbe. I can however edit the note by double clicking. Just letting you know, I’m looking forward to the new interface in the windows version it is much nicer than the web version. Thank you.
‘J. ‘Hammer’ Helmer’ – Thanks for the tip on WikKey + Arrow. That helped me out.
The trouble that I mentioned about Japanese is fixed in beta 6. thanx for your effort.
I just downloaded the windows beta app – why does ist feel so sluggish – doing anything causes a lag not apparent in the browser version. I want to like Nozbe, Price is up there…I would expect a dream experience….and did I miss this – how do you select multiple tasks to edit at once? and one thought – items manually sorted in one list to the top of the list remain in different sort orders when viewing by context etc whcih is understandable – but if one bothtered to manually sort a priority to the top of a list – maybe the option to refkect it elsewhere without having to resort to starring…i dunno…why cant i drag a task to a differnt project?
I think nozbe you might be making a mistake with this standalone app – i prefer the responsiveness of the web interface, i even like the layout better (at first i was mesmerized by the standalone app’s layout – but have since changed my mind after using it for awhile) I think that you are already too expensive, add the complexity of trying to be like a hosted exchange account is only going to cost more in the end..now yo uhave to develope three interfaces (standalon windows and mac) where one web interface would have done the job….I hope that you dont stop development of the web interface for the standalone app – makes me leery of dropping any money on this as you have a no refund policy whatsoever….again find the lag painful when using the standalone app. like the layout of web app – it is all right there and functions…the only possible saving grace is that this is beta and maybe in its final release it will have no lag….but having the complexity of an offline file and another few interfaces leaves me to think that what i like most – the web interface – may suffer in the end
I keep finding your site and have considered testing it out until I realize how expensive it is. The free option is useless with only 5 projects. I’m not apposed to paying but a monthly fee is extremely overpriced as apposed to the typical $25 one time fee or even completely free price of your competitors. This may be the best GTD system ever devised but I’ll never know because I won’t waste my time evaluating it.
