Great tips, Michael. I have now disabled the “popup”-message from Thunderbird, telling me about new mails. I have removed the preview-window. I have removed the sound-warning when recieving new emails. And (in linux) I have moved Thunderbird to another virtual desktop than my primary. So that I have to take a step to read my mail – when I want to and have the time to – not every time Thunderbird tells me, and shows me in every possible way, that I have something unread.
