(Nozbe 2.0) Designing new Nozbe logo

Michael   Monday, June 1
Comments: 28

It’s the first day of June and this month we’ll be finishing Nozbe 2.0 (both design + development).

In this series of blog posts I’ll be showing you how is the Nozbe 2.0 process going and what we’re doing to make sure you’ll be able to get more done with Nozbe!

New Nozbe LOGO

I love the current Nozbe logo – you may like it or not, but I love it. And I never wanted to change it.

But after 2 years in business and hearing lots of feedback we decided to change the logo. To make it more modern, more “2.0”, but to keep the old feel.

Here’s what we did:

Step 1 – current Nozbe logo

What I liked about the logo? The big “O” with a clock and a smile. The clock is the symbol of productivity and time-management.

Step 2 – first designs of logo 2.0

The graphic designer knew I wanted to keep the clock and he started playing with it… The old-school-alarm clock looks really funny, don’t you think?

I didn’t like this and I told him I needed something different, so I started drawing…

Step 3 – my sketch of “clock” and “tick”

I told him I wanted to have the “tick” of a to-do list with a “clock” of a calendar mixed together.

Step 4 – taking my sketch for a spin

This looks really good. Almost perfect, there is a tick and a clock… but the “O” is not legible and you can’t really say it belongs to the name.

Step 5 – and the winner is…

This is the result we’ve been looking for! There will be some minor tweaks yet, but it’s more less the final logo we want to keep. The final logo will be released together with the new Nozbe 2.0 interface.

How did you like the process? How do you like the new Nozbe logo? What do you think? Please let me know in the comments!

certainly the last design is the best of all, but I also like the original one.. ;), I understand also the need for change and it’s good (even important) to have a “moderm” logo.

I like the last one.

Nice work! I like it.

Matt Mercurio 1 Jun 09 16:50

Nice! I can imagine the new checkmark as the iPhone App icon.

:-)
Marcin Kasperski 1 Jun 09 18:32

Step 1: very nice, well looking logo.

Step 2: crap

Step 3: ???

Step 4: crap

Step 5: barely acceptable but far worse than 1.

Of course that’s my personal opinion.

Michael 1 Jun 09 19:32

Marcin – I respect your opinion and thanks for letting me know :-)

I’ve been fighting with the “need to change” a lot and I’m still not 100% convinced to take the plunge. But the more I look at the no 5 the more I like it.

@Matt – yes – it’ll be a very nice icon for the iPhone app :-)

Nice choice Michael – well done. I like it very much – in fact I like #4 slightly better than #5 because of the nice color contrast. In either case, I like the “Apple Simplicity” and clean look. I always thought the old logo lacked professionalism (there is probably a better way to say it – but it was too busy, and a bit amatuer looking in my opinion). Bottom line is, everyone’s interpretation will be different – go with your gut (#5!).

We’re all looking forward to the new app. When can you share a sneak peak?

+1 Sneak peak at the new app.

:-)
Ray Anderson 1 Jun 09 21:43

I actually prefer #4.

Stéphane 2 Jun 09 13:45

Thanks Michael for sharing with us this process. I like the new logo.

#5 and a great logo for the IPhone app.

:-)
Nick Bomford 2 Jun 09 16:42

OK – I prefer No.5.

But the original logo ain’t broke so why fix it! I would rather that you used your time getting the product itself done. (Victor Meldrew? Moi?)

:-)

I think its important to have a fresh new look with the launch of a complete overhaul of the app. I think the checkmark gives a nice visual and mental que to getting things done (more so than the clock IMO)

:-)
Mark Williams 4 Jun 09 12:16

Step 5 logo is great. Big improvement over the original. The original has a wavy font and makes it look comic-book like and therfore childish. Especially with the smily face on the clock. It would look great for a children’s TV program. The new logo is much cleaner and contemporary and much more business like.

:-)
Mark Williams 4 Jun 09 12:18

>> I would rather that you used your time getting the product itself done.
Except that a childish logo will cause a lot of business people (who would willingly pay) to instantly click away from the nozbe page the first time they see it and this dents sales leading to less money to pay for time to develop the product itself. :-)

Eduardo Oliveros 4 Jun 09 20:15

agree with Mark

:-)
Mark 5 Jun 09 08:05

I think that the new logo has lost something that the original had. I agree that the original needs updating but I think some of the ‘feel’ has been lost on the new logo. There is a real enthusiasm that Michael drives into the tool and I think the new logo does not complement this.

:-)
Michael 5 Jun 09 10:15

@Nick – we are working like crazy to get the new app done but as Mark W. said, we also need to make it less “childish” (good point Mark!)

We are doing a total redesign of the app and logo is just a part of it and I wanted to share this with you.

@the other Mark – I hope you’ll feel my enthusiasm when the new version of the app hits the streets (I mean the Internet)

:-)
Dimitri Hofman 5 Jun 09 10:41

I agree that the old logo seemed a bit more dynamic, playful (some called it childish). The new one is indeed more business like, gives me also the impression of robustness, trustworthiness and professionalism. So, not at all a bad choice. Good job there, Michael.

:-)
Jeroen Sangers 5 Jun 09 18:32

I like the new logo, as it is more professional but still friendly. I see that you also changed the tagline. Are you targeting a more non-GTD specific audience with version 2?

:-)
Kiran Denniz 8 Jun 09 03:44

i like it! clean look. still not a fan of the tag line.

:-)
Taz 9 Jun 09 21:08

I like the [i]style [/i]of new logo, But why change the [i]wording [/i]from “Simply Get [b]Things [/b]Done!” to “Simply Get [b]It [/b]Done”? The original wording ties Nozbe better to GTD. Also eliminating italics and the exclaimation point takes away the “excitement” of the phrase. Just my opinion…..Taz

Oops. Thought I could use BBCode here. Guess not. Meant to write:

My opinion is the #4 is the best, but if you have to have the clock much like an ‘o’ letter then the ‘o’ clock’s diameter should be a little smaller, more like this green circle in the #4 proposition and a thickness of the ‘o’ clock’s stroke should be a little more thick. Yet remember :) it is only my private opinion.

Kevin Footer 13 Jun 09 02:23

Hey Michael,
I like the program… and I like the new logo!

Raymond Burket 17 Jun 09 15:33

I too prefer #4. If you want to use #5 you must shrink the “O.” Worrying about have the “O” outline but then making it totally out of scale doesn’t work. People will “get” the “o” with just the clock. My only other input, the colors and font are very similar to Django (my fav framework). Be nice to mix it up a bit…

:-)
Alistair Williamson 1 Jul 09 06:25

Lower case ‘n’ for nozbe would balance the logo around the clock face/tick (and be even more modern). I definitely think it’s a move forward.

:-)
junpino 19 Jul 09 18:47

I love the new logo; modern, clean, + makes sense! However, the app background color in the older app is more conducive to having a better feel and not repulsing the eyes compared to the proposed background colors. WHITE, MUTED BLUE WITH THE FAINT STRIPES, AND THE RICH GREEN...STILL THE BEST!
