Important Change”: Tags have been renamed to Groups now as it proved to be more suitable for what they mean in Nozbe
—
It took one more day of testing, but the newest Nozbe update is here – the old-school Nozbe look with tags for projects – something I’ve long wanted to implement.
First off, let me start with this – I totally get the idea people need sub-projects – but I never liked the idea… so I found a better solution – Tags :-)
Why sub-projects suck and tags are the way to go?
I guess you can compare it to the two approaches to management (I studied management, not programming):
Traditional management – high hierarchy:
Boss -> Director -> Senior Manager -> Manager -> Employees
Modern management - flat hierarchy:
Boss -> Project Managers -> Employees
The difference is obvious - modern approach features more real-management but less steps to the boss - faster and more transparent responsibilities and great flexibility.
The same can be applied to the “sub-project” vs “tag” school. Now, here’s how it works in Nozbe:
When you open your Nozbe account, you will see a tag cloud above your project list:

To add a tag to a project, just click on it and once it’s loaded on your screen, click to “Edit project” and you can add your tags:

I’ve added tag “nozbe” to my Nozbe project. You can add more tags to your project; simply separate them with space, eg. nozbe web gtd.
Later I’ve done the same to the other project on my list: “Nozbe devel” which is my Nozbe development project. Now, when I look at my project list, I can see a new tag “nozbe” in my tag cloud:

So now, if I want to work only on Nozbe and don’t want to look at all my other projects, I can just click on the “nozbe” tag and look what happens:

Yes, my projects list has shortened only to those tagged by “nozbe” and my nozbe tag became bold.
If I want to see all my projects again, I can simply click on the “show all projects” link to see the complete list again.
Tags will make you even more productive and let you focus on your work at the moment.
No more scrolling through all of your projects (especially if you have PRO or Super! accounts and lots of projects).
You can tag your projects with many tags! – in a “sub-project” world a project can only belong to one master-project. In a “tag” world – a project can belong to many tags, thus making your setup even more productive and easier to use.
Enjoy using tags and hope you like the new feature… next week I will be implementing even more cool stuff… and tomorrow the beta-version of Nozbe for iPhone will be out, so stay tuned!
If you don’t have a Nozbe account, just go ahead and get a free Nozbe Account and try out how tags can work for you!

Is it possible to tag tasks?
Is it possible to tag tasks?
Context works like a tag, that’s what I use context for. But the limitation is only one tag per task at a time. :(
I would like to tag tasks also. Some of my tasks cross projects. When i open Edit>Project I do not see tag box. I only see Project Groups?
Tags have been renamed to Groups now. It’s the same functionality.
Tasks have contexts not tags. We’ll be adding a possibility to add more than one contexts to tasks in the near future.
Thanks Michael, as I would like to be able to tag tasks as well
It appears that we can only query against the project list based on one tag at a time….would it be hard to build in the functionality to being able to search against all active projects using multiple tags? For example, using “Client A” and “active” groups to show me all Client A projects that are active.
I think clicking on multiple tags/groups at a time would be a great idea, we’ll see how this can be implemented. Thanks!
Michael – I’ve created projects and successfully shared them with colleagues via Nozbe. However, I’m seeing where one of my colleagues added tags/groups to a project that she created/shared with me….but I don’t see any of the group names assigned to that project. Please advise as we really need this functionality to work correctly for us. Thanks!
hi michael snaps on the great program, it took me sooo long to find something to work with my iphone, few things to make this baby perfect – we really need the netcentrics like automatic erase of a next action, also i need to be able to book appointments for specific times on my calender, not just the day and how long it will take, finally cant is it possible to have contexts grouped under the specific “groups” so that if im only working on a “subproject” or as you call them group, i can see all the context and actions only ?? maybe these features are already there as im new.. however once again i think this program has the potential to be much better than the netcentrics one…
What are project label used for?
dido!! I don’t understand the term project label either
Any update on being able to add tags or multiple contexts to tasks?
Labels, projects, and topics are flipped from what I would expect. If I can only tag a project, there’s no way for me to look inside the project at each of the tasks on a tag basis. If I tag photos at Flickr or links at Delicious, I’m tagging the end-of-tree item, meaning that I’m creating groupings of individual items, not grouping of buckets.
Almost perfect. We have been testing new project/task managers for a long time and had almost decided on Nozbe (still have an account). However, you really are missing the boat on subtasks. I have read all ofyour forums… and let me explain why your system will not work for us and why you could really make a lot of your clients happy by making a small change. The majority of our business is web design. One site will need 5-100 pages and each page (task) may have several to hundreds of tasks for each one. To create them as projects with tags means that I end up with literally hundreds and hundreds of projects that are listed out and I have to click the tag to associate them all. Sorry to say, but this cannot work for us. It is much easier to view a task within a project called home page and the see what items I need to work on the complete the home page. With, normally 20 websites in progress at one time, I would have 20 project called home page all tagged to the project they are associated with. This leads to more confusion than simplicity.
There are so many great things about your product (the iPad and online version) but you have really missed it on this one and therefore more than likely lost a client.
Selecting multiple labels at once would be great. Also, adding a single label simultaneously to multiple projects would save a lot of time.
Also, a button to list all unlabeled projects.
Try to spin it however you want, but lack of sub-tasks is a critical flaw in what otherwise appears to be the best GTD solution available. Tags are great, but no way they replace sub-tasks. Your explanation that tasks are more consistent with a better management approach is nonsense. You expect every organization to retool its entire project management structure around your GTD app? Best to accommodate both approaches to broaden appeal to customers. Please add this basic feature as soon as possible.
Can you make it so that I can order the “next actions” in my projects so that when I complete one… it goes away and is replaced by the next action step on the list. This way I get order my tasks one time rather than searching for my next step in the project. I prefer to only see the next action for each project.
