Colorful Context Icons will help you get more done!

We’re getting ready to publish our brand new iPhone app which we’ve built together in partnership with Macoscope guys.

While working on the design on the app, developers reminded me about something we wanted to do a long time ago… and we finally did:

Introducing NEW, REDESIGNED Context icons

Here you go, 32 new icons for you to enjoy:

Our old context icons were all black. They were kind of classy in an old-school kind of way, but because they were all the same color, folks had hard time recognizing them in their action lists. Now they are colorful and really beautiful.

Now the default context icon is the “@” icon, just as it’s supposed to be.

All icons are live now on the server for you to enjoy

We’ve replaced the old icons with the similar new ones. They are also bigger (22 vs 16 pixels size) and really nice to look at. They will help you get more done!

While at it, we’ve also re-worked other aspects of Nozbe design, reducing the distances between items on the project and context list. You’ll be able to squeeze more projects and context on your screen now.

New Icons look gorgeous on the iPhone

Our long-time iPhone users know how contexts looked like on the old app, now they are in high-res and they look like this:

Wow, now look at that – beautiful cotext icons on a beautiful iPhone app :-)

Speaking of icons, just have a look at the new icon we’ll be introducing with the new iPhone app. It’s simply stunning (just compare it with the old one on the right):

We’re testing the iPhone app on our live server right now, I’m using it with my live data and we’re getting ready for Appstore submission, so stay tuned!

Michael – great job with icons.
Here in an idea to make contexts even better – why not distinguish between contexts that have actions and those that do not. For example gray out those that have 0 actions?

:-)
Michelle Christy 23 Apr 10 17:48

looking forward to the new iphone app. keep it going!

Michael 24 Apr 10 23:38

Wow everyone, thanks for the great response. We’ve been working really hard on making this icon transition as smooth as possible, so I’m really happy you like it :-)

How will the new icons help you get more done? Easy:
- nice design always helps and motivates :-)
- colorful icons help you quickly assess actions and categorize them. When they all were black, it was hard to see the difference. Now it’s obvious.

Again, it’s great to hear our hard work gets appreciated. Thanks again!

You’ve several changes over the last year…all have been improvements to an already superior system. Keep up the good work.

I am wondering when the new iPhone app launches, will it ba an alltogether new app or will it present as an update??

:-)
David 26 Apr 10 00:56

@ Brittany – I understand that this is a completely new app so there won’t be an update in the app store.

Also, like most of the iPhone GTD apps, the 2.0 app won’t be free – since there is a commercial developer involved they need to be paid =) For me, I have a number of GTD iPhone apps I’ve bought but don’t use, so paying for Nozbe that I’ll use everyday is no big deal.

I love the new icons. Much easier to identify context. It’s a good start, but I’d love to see additional choices as well. Someone mentioned letters. I think that is a great idea. I’d also like to see a hammer for home improvement/building projects (the icons are primarily business focused, but we obviously have many non-business related items in our lives). I’m sure you can start a thread on desired additional icons and get a lot of good feedback. However, do you even have plans for adding additional icons?

:-)
Judith 27 Apr 10 21:51

That’s funny, I had made a note in Nozbe to make a suggestion about icons—and here they are! I love the color, and I agree it helps you accomplish more because it accesses the brain in a different way. I’d love to see the option to choose the color for each icon. I would make my work computer blue and my home computer green, for example. I also wondered about adding a few icons. For example, I’ve been using the car for errands and would like an airplane to represent travel. I love the interactivity of suggestions for Nozbe. Thanks for encouraging them.

Dimitri Hofman 30 Apr 10 09:24

Great job. Icons gives the program a more modern and dynamic look.

:-)
Courtney Huntington 1 May 10 00:35

Great addition with the new color context icons. I like the old Nozbe icon better, though; it’s more unique. The new one looks too much like all the other “To-Do” and “GTD” app icons.

:-)
Pieter Swinkels 4 May 10 12:20

Terrific improvement! I love the icons but miss a very basic one: reading! Also, it would be SO good to have them on the printed Next Actions list to make those clearer

:-)
CLD 8 May 10 18:51

I really like the new icons- at first I thought they might be too large, but they really DO help me distinguish them from one another more quickly. Sometimes other people really DO know what’s good for me. ;-)

:-)
Vadim Zee 5 Sep 10 09:05

is it possible to add own icons? I’m actually missing few ones… like “Photography”, “Travel”, “Outdoor”, “Medicine” and may be few more.

:-)
Danny Rose 19 Dec 10 10:49

I’d also like t be able to add my own icons — any plans for this?

:-)
Matthew Long 2 Jan 11 06:14

I don’t mean to be the odd one out, but i think that the new icons are a bit ‘whimsical’... maybe I’m just too serious but I MUCH preferred the old ones. I like the addition of colour, but the cartoonish nature of the new icons looks somewhat amateur – anyway, just my impression.

:-)
Sophie Guéant 9 Nov 11 09:16

I agree with Matthew Long. We need sobriety at work.

:-)
Daxxit 1 Apr 12 17:50

I would like to support Danny Rose suggestion (19 Dec 10) – this would be a big plus for me.
